If you like the job don't rock the boat. The way I see it is they are paying you to do a job the way they want it done, if you take the check you should do how they want it done. My boss does the same thing, sort of. He runs everyday on his lunch, changes clothes in his office, discreetly but not really behind closed doors (people sometimes walk in on him shirtless) and he leaves his clothes hanging in his bathroom, But it's all good, it's his name on the sign hanging on the building . Please don't think I'm complaining, I love my job and the family that owns the company, and my boss (the oldest son) is absolutely the best person I know, I've worked for them since I got out of school and plan to until I retire.

I'm just glad it was a "talking to" and not something formal. IMO, it's time to modify the behavior and do what was asked.

Of course I don't really know but I'm guessing that some of the complaints individually could have been over-looked but collectively it was too much to ignore from their perspective.
We have clients and associates that we work with in the same downtown area and it's very common to walk 20 minutes or so rather than climbing into a car (which probably wouldn't save much if any time honestly). If it had just been that, it might have been OK.
Anyway, thanks for posting this. There could be another commuter or two out there that will benefit from your experience.

in my opinion.

I can't imagine changing in my office in front of/ around coworkers. I would still have used the bathroom. Even though salaried, what time are you expected to be at your desk? to and from? If you were shorting (either later or leaving earlier) that I could see how they might have a complaint.
I don't know how getting from the sales facility to the plant makes any difference as long as you get there. I mean if you drove and drove slow it would be about the same amount of time right?
Recently I moved from the plant where I had my own private office to the new sales & management facility where I have a nice roomy cubicle in an open floor plan. Long story short, I never really altered my routine, which was to change clothes at my desk while a fan blew on me. It worked great, and the cubicle walls are somewhat private. I also used a large towel to cover myself while changing. So, no one would see much if they walked by. It was a semi-private condition, unlikely anyone can be offended.
Well, on Friday, SHTF. HR called me into the office with a list of complaints. Changing in the open area and storing my bike clothes in my office topped the list. Other complaints were spending too much time changing and preparing my bike for rides home or putting it away on arrival. Also a gripe was me walking from the sales facility to the plant when needed instead of driving: 5 minutes versus maybe 12.
The changing issue I can deal with. The time thing irks me a bit because I am salary. I like the job, so I stfu and took my medicine. I guess I am venting now.

Do they dictate how fast you are required to drive? I'm guessing if you drove your car at 3 mph they may request you switch back to the bike.
But that's my ornery side talking.

It's encouraging that you are fessing up to the complaints that they brought to your attention. That's a positive sign.
I hope that you are very good at your job, because you're now on the "not favorite" employee list. Agree that you should observe management's wishes to the letter.
Good luck going forward. How will you solve the riding clothes storage during the day? Did they offer any help with that?

My work starts at 9. When pedaling, I arrive around 8:30. I can put my needed equipment in the car, cool down , wash up and change in the bathroom and be ready @ 9 am. In MA, if working more than 6 hours, you get 15 minute break am and pm, plus 30 minute lunch. I sometimes use my " lunch" to do errands or bike prep, no issues.

I am very good at my job, but they would still fire me if I became a "problem."

BTW: the Cubicle is like a small office with four walls and a small door opening. It's not easy to see inside. But, obviously it's not impossible either.

I have cubicle similar to that but why not change in the bathroom? I mean you are in front of your coworkers?!
See, I am the opposite. I grew up changing in public with a towel to cover the "privates." Of course, a lot of people are not comfortable with someone in plain view getting naked under their towel.

I have a set of those in my spare parts box. I use them for winter. But, I don't see how someone complaining about me walking won't raise an even bigger stink if I go for a mid-day bike ride, if you know what I mean. "After all," they will say, "riding a bike takes 3 minutes longer than driving a car."

I beat a bunch of colleagues on a roughly 2 mile lunch trip, because I hustled right out the door with my bike, and they had to walk all the way to the parking lot, plus park their car at the destination.

His very visible bike habit got him in some hot water and he is probably under a bit of a microscope for the time being.
I think trying to prove a point by riding his bike between buildings isn't a good idea.

A main point here is that you are the new guy at that facility and the new guy is always subject to amplified scrutiny.

I would be shocked if someone at work wandered in and starting changing clothes in their cubicle. You just don't do that.
My co-worker used to work with a guy that played basketball at lunch. This guy would either shower afterwards, or would just wipe down. Anyway, he hung the wet towel in his cubicle to dry. That alone got a lot of attention and comments. I couldn't imagine what people would say if he started changing clothes there as well.
