Need advice: Good, not bar-end, handlebar mounted MIRROR?

Hi All,

I'm hoping someone out there might have some insight on this. I'm looking for a good recommendation for a handlebar mounted mirror. My problem is that I have bar-end shifters, so I need something that will mount directly to the handlebars in some way. I've been trying to use a couple different helmet-mounted mirrors over the past few months, but I'm really not into it.

Any thoughts?

Here's some info:
Bike: 2016 Novara Randonee

Thanks for your help,

BBG

No Pain, no gain

Your best option is this. If for whatever reason that mirror can't work for you... I for one would try harder to get used to the helmet mirror. This is the one I use, and it too takes getting used to. But once you do learn how it works, you are spoiled for anything less. Riding a bicycle was not a jump on and ride affair. Neither was smoking cigarettes or flying helicopters... kidding about the cigarettes.

If you have a drop bar bike with Shimano STI levers, the Mirrcycle Road Mirror might be worth a look:

Thanks very much for the suggestions guys! Yes, I'd looked at the Mirrycle stuff. I didn't think this was an option because obviously I don't have STI's, but it looks like there's a chance it may work with other brake levers. I'll definitely do some more research. As for the helmet mounted one-- that looks a pretty bad-ass mirror! I still just can't get my head around having it attached to my... my head. Makes it hard to give the eyebrow raise to the passing lady folk.

Had a close run-in with a moron in a service vehicle tonight that reinforced the fact that I really need to get something going on this front. To be continued...

Congrats on wanting a mirror to be safe. Google "Velcro Mounted Bicycle Mirror" I've seen these in the stores. Some look like they can accommodate a variety of handlebars and mounting options. I used handlebar mounted mirrors for years, until I got a glasses-mounted take-a-look mirror. In fact, I still mount mirrors on my handlebars (bar-end...sorry) in case I'm caught without my glasses mirror, and because they allow me to double check behind me.

Not an answer to your question, but you may want to consider a helmet- or eyeglass-mounted mirror. I use the Take-a-Look mirror and attach it to my glasses. Some attach it to their helmets. It takes some practice to use well, but I really like it. It's also pretty sturdy. It folds up, and I can put it in my front pocket.

Sorry about that. I assumed because that Radonee came with Shimano components, that the levers would be your standard STI, but closer inspection reveals the lack of the 2nd, smaller lever.

I like my bar end shifters, but just can't use a helmet/eyeglass mount. I really only need the right/rear bar end, so I run a standard downtube shifter for the front and have a Third Eye bar end mirror in the left bar.

I ride in an urban environment and have tried a few different mirrors but didn't really like any of them so I just ordered this one.

I'll let you know how it works out when I get it.

I modified a Mirrycle MTN bar end mirror to mount on my bars with a reflector mount wrapped around an old section or rubber inner tube. Stays put nicely, and can still be positioned to work with multiple hand grip positions.

Very smart. I think I'll try this. I have an old MTB Mirrycle in the parts box that needs a new home.

Agree. I'm a fan of the compact version. Take-a-Look has less vibration and better optics than any other mirror out there.

I thought the same thing until I spent some significant time fiddling with it, adjusting it and training myself in how to use it.

As for mirrors mounted on the bike, my favorite is the Bike Eye. You can get it through Amazon.

I've been using these as I can get it out far enough to see past my pannier. Straps right on the handlebar where ever you'd like. Not totally vibration free but good enough to tell what's behind you. Have one on my everyday commuter Trek and on a '14 Radonee.

My issue is with eye focus. I need to wear my prescription glasses while riding, but my eyes can't focus on something a few inches from my face with them on.

The armchair physicist in me wonders if the eye is actually focused on the mirror, or instead, at the imaginary focus of the object in the mirror. I suspect the latter, from actual experience. Non-issue in other words.

That is not an issue when looking at a mirror, unless you are trying to look at the edges of the mirror rather than the actual mirrored image. The distant mirrored image will be in focus because it is still a distant image. For example, if you need glasses for distance, you cannot simply remove your glasses, and look at a distant object reflected in a mirror, the reflected object will still be out of focus.

I like the mirror the OP bought. It's the Ortlieb mirror and you can find it from a variety of sources. It does the job well.

Hey, if you have posted the picture before, I may have copied it from you. I believe I got the idea from this forum. Great minds think alike.
