As a matter of fact I am! This afternoon, I came out to the parking garage to unlock my bike and my rear wheel was flat. *shakes fist*

Great bike, and chro-mo is way better than aluminum.

Dump the seat QR for a clean allen bolt; looks better and less chance of your seat & post getting stolen...

Brief thread hijack, if no one minds. I've been meaning to ask about this. Where does one get the appropriate allen bolt (and nut, I assume)? Should I just ride to a hardware store and look through the bins to find the parts that fit?

That's what I do for lots of things around the house and sometimes for my bikes, but I didn't know if the nut and bolt are bicycle-specific items or if they're just plain old nuts and bolts.

True confessions: I haven't really examined the QR on my MTB, or I could probably figure it out for myself, but this is just one of those things I wonder about on a slow afternoon at work when my bike is not nearby to study.

Thanks.

Yes, allen bolts on bikes are standard metric sizes. (Others here can even tell you off the top of their head what sizes!) Mostly it's bolts that screw into parts, no nuts needed (brazeons for water bottles, brakes, racks, fenders, fastening bolts for stems, etc)

If you have a matching bolt that you want more of, you can always take it in the store and find a match. If not, I don't think Lowes or Home Depot would hassle you if you walked an entire bike in to try out different bolts. A smaller, neighborhood hardware store, I'd check first with an employee just to be cool.

NOTE: one exception I can think of, when I needed a 'standard' 15mm axle nut (for a kids bike without QR), Home Despot didn't carry it. Very annoying.

If you are replacing a QR you will need both bolt and nut, something like this:

Most shops sell them for about $5, or you can find them on line...

Thanks for the QR replacement info. Hopefully that will be helpful to others as well as to me. Much appreciated.

My Ergon 3 grips with smaller bar ends finally came in the mail. Put them on today. Looking forward to giving them a go.
One step closer to being done with her. Still need new wheels and possibly stem & bar.

Nice stuff.

I have a 1995 Trek 830 which is just about to be completely overhauled, with only the frame and fork surviving, but my bike isn't a lovely green colour like yours, but rather a blandish black with some questionable purple fade & silver lettering.

Share some pics of it when you're done. Love to see it. I'll agree the sparkly green color is awesome. Wish they still made bikes like that.

Mind sharing what bars are on there?

I'd be interested in recommendations for bars to put on - I'd like to stick with a mostly standard MTB bar (flat, or maybe with a slight dip). I'm not interested in anything swept back.

I'll take a pic of the whole bike next time I'm out on it -the late afternoon sun wasn't cooperating today.

The bike on the left is one I bought new in 1995 and I had them put a bar with about 75mm of rise and maybe 8-12 degree pullback, which is common on MTB bars. The bike on the right is one I bought in 2012 or 2013 and it had a Profile Design MTB bar on it. This bar has about 60mm rise, 9 degree pullback and is 66mm in width. This was my favorite bar until for a couple of years and then I bought a RaceFace Respond with about 40mm of rise, 9-10 degree sweep and about 78cm in width. I have my grips placed so the bar is probably 70-72cm in width.

Here's the final version of the bike on the right, with the RaceFace bar installed:

I have swapped the components in the photo above over to a 2008 Karate Monkey frameset I just bought. For some reason, the camera lense fogged over when I was taking this picture.

Here's the bar:

I love Surly frames. (I have a cross-check).
That looks like a killer awesome ride. How much more narrow are the tires than what comes standard on the KM?

Those are 40mm Schwalbe Duremes but I plan to replace them with at least 50mm tires ASAP. Right now, my top choice is the Maxxis Torch 2.1" tire. Greater tire clearance and less toe-overlap were the two main reasons I bought the KM. The KM and the Trek 730 have almost the same geometry except for the KM having a 3cm longer top-tube.

I'm already dreaming of another KM or an Ogre to build up with gears. It's going to be hard to give up the single-speed option on this bike. So much fun to ride!

Yeah it's cool. I was hoping for something lighter is all. All my bikes are chromoly now. But it's been great. She's a beast.
I'll take some updated pics this week.
