They do not cover or go in your ears, but sit in front of them. Via magic, they bypass the eardrum and pipe the tunes directly into your brain.

The effect is that they do not block outside sound. They aren't the greatest sound quality, but perfect for an audio book while riding.
Thanks for this reply. I've been considering them for some time now after a couple of posts on BF, but couldn't rind a place to inspect/try them. According to the website, they are at Best Buy, Apple Store and some other convenient outlets.

Back in the 1980's was a product called something like "Bonephones," which was a small Walkman type of radio with two speakers that hung around the neck and rested on the chest to conduct the sound through the bones. I tried them and they did sound pretty good. A few years back I futilely searched hard to find a pair. Somewhere I read or was told that once the Sony Walkman came out, they disappeared from the scene.

Playing horrible county trash (a triple redundancy) at any volume where civilized folks could hear it would be dangerous because sensible folks will be tempted to poke a stick into the front wheel spokes of such a cyclist bumpkin.

Anything by the Wicked Pickett is awesome; especially Midnight Hour and Mustang Sally
