Shower gel? Really? Get yourself a bar of Grandpa's Pine Tar Soap. It'll keep you smelling good all day long.

The BSO I used to commute on decided to pop a chain off in the middle of an intersection. I almost launched over the handlebars when it happened, but ended up going down hard on my left leg. I have about a 4 inch by 3 inch road rash scar that is slowly fading to remind me. The day it happened, I got back on the bike, put the chain back on, squirted water on it, and kept riding to work. The feel of salty sweat dripping into an open wound is not something I'd like to repeat.

That's a colossal misjudgment on your part. Goes to show you, you can never trust a fart!

I tried in vein to wash the shower gel out in the sink, but this just made tons of bubbles. The more water I added, the worse it got.
So I cycled home with wet, slimy bubbly derriere

Shower gel is now kept inside its own plastic bag at all times!

This whole account had me laughing out loud! I couldn't quit giggling enough to tell my husband what was so funny, so I just handed the iPad over to him. Now he's laughing too. I'm sort of imagining bubbles emerging from your back side all the way home!

That's just funny. It would have been better if you said you were farting bubbles on the way home. Thanks for the laugh. At least you didn't have to worry about chaffing either. I have had the flats, low lights that ended up no lights... but the worst was getting to work and forgetting my badge. 10 miles one way. Can't get into a nuke plant without one. Luckily, I have a very nice wife who had to wake up early and bring it.

I guess my worst was on my second commute. I was still riding sidewalks and stuff (that was SO long ago!) There was one spot I'd ridden over in the afternoon where the sidewalk was missing (it was just grass). It turned out that in the morning just after the sprinklers shut off, that ground was as soft as quicksand. My front wheel sunk down, at the start of the sidewalk on the other side, and the bike catapulted me face first right into the concrete. Cracked helmet and a few bumps and bruises. The fork was bent. I walked the bike back home (only a few blocks), cleaned up and drove to work. Not really awful, but that's the worst commute I had.

baron von trail....not related to this post, but what kind of dog is that in your avatar? We adopted one that looks identical, except she has a bit of a beard, and some mohawkish terrier hair down her back.

Not too bad but a couple months back I stuffed about three bananas in my back jersey pocket. The jersey is white and I like my bananas on the ripe side. Suffice to say that by the time I arrived at work it looked as if I'd had a major accident that somehow made up out of my shorts. No more ultra ripe bananas in the jersey for me.

Luckily, I've had no major disasters.

My commute can sometimes involve the rough gravel levee roads in Dallas. It had rained a lot the previous week, but I thought the levees had dried enough to be ride-able. I was right for the most part.
I found a patch of thick mud and fell into it, coating my whole side with that nasty smelling stuff.
I work at a fancy building with marble floors, etc. When I arrived, I had to take off my mud-caked shoes and leave them at my bike. I had to walk, in my socks, covered in mud, all the way across the building to the locker room.
So now I'm not only the crazy guy who rides his bike a long distance to work, I'm the guy who shows up to work covered in mud.

I had one serious medical disaster a few years ago, but on the lighter side, just yesterday I was riding to work on a cool fall morning when I experienced simultaneously a cold sensation on my lower abdomen and a warm sensation on my left inner thigh. I looked down and saw my underwear poking out an inch or two from the left leg of my coaches shorts. It took a moment for my brain to process this and then it became clear. When I hang my bike clothes in a corner of the warehouse at the office, I drape my briefs over the crotch inside of my coaches shorts so my co-workers won't see them should they head back there. Last week I had caught a ride home due to a mechanical issue and forgot my bike clothes. While I could have picked them up on Monday, I used retrieving them as an excuse to ride on Sunday wearing another pair of shorts. I grabbed my bike clothes and stuffed 'em in my backpack. Monday morning I grabbed the coaches shorts from last week figuring they're still relatively clean having been worn only on the ride in. And somehow the pair of underwear inside them managed to hang on in there until my ride into work Monday morning. It could have been worse. I might have walked into the office with underwear hanging down my leg. And of course it wasn't a painful debilitating injury that kept me off the bike for a year like that one time....

Nothing major really. A crash that resulted in the bike requiring some significant repairs and a bail-out call and a shower, some bandages to keep the blood under control and change of clothes before driving to work. That's the worst I've had, and I don't consider that a disaster, it was just a pain in the butt, to work 90 minutes late and $100 in parts to fix the bike.

Other stuff less important than that. Lost a $60 taillight, immediately re-rode my route (45 miles before work that morning) and never found it. Crud like that.

A flat tire during a heavy evening rain storm and no road shoulder to change it on. At least the rim survived, after riding eight miles flat the tube and tire were unusable.

For those who have access to them, I have found IT rooms, with the industrial strength air conditioning, to be the perfect place to hang up bike clothes during a work shift.

Today has been a mildly annoying commute.
First I brought all my clothing for today yesterday when I was in the car, so that I didn't have to carry it on the bike. Then I found out today is dress down day, so I had to carry a different set of clothes anyway.

Then after my shower I discovered I've forgotten my T-shirt, so I'm sat here with just a jumper on. I don't think you can tell unless you look real close, so shhh! don't tell anyone

Wow! Mine got down to the low 40s once and that sucked. I don't want to find out what 13 feels like.

At the end of my commute to the train station there's a short section where I ride on the sidewalk. I was especially tired one morning and it had rained heavily the night before. So being somewhat out of it I rode off the sidewalk on the non-road side and into a bunch of mud. In attempting to get back onto the sidewalk I took it at too acute an angle so instead of climbing from the mud to the sidewalk the tire got caught in a the rut created by the side of the walk and I fell. Slow speed, not hurt, but rolled across the sidewalk off the curb and into roadway gutter which was still flowing quite a bit from the previous rain. Woke me up and I was still laughing while trying to dry my shirt with the train station men's room hand drier.

It hurts just to read that.
