Yeah, I agree he's far from a doofus. Sounds like he's always had a little "let's just see where the road takes me" attitude, so I salute him in his endeavors. This is certainly a "let's see if I can turn this into a job" thing, but more power to him if he hated his job and wants to just be happy. Not a surprise he replaced the seat, pedals and tires though. I have no experience with the Citibike program, but here in the twin cities we have Nice Ride, which has comparably heavy but functional bikes.

He got punched in the face in Oklahoma by some bike hating driver.

No kidding, that's great publicity for them. I can imagine someone wondering if they could go very far on one of those seeing an ad for this guy riding from New York to California and thinking that's enough proof for them. I know I wondered how good those bikes would be once you got them out of the urban jungles, his ride answers that question.

Well that sucks,we could use those here. DC's way hillier than NYC.

The "new" bikes are geared higher, not lower. They're better, in that you can ride a reasonable speed without spinning like a madman. However, they don't seem as durable. Many of them won't go into third (high) gear, defeating the higher gearing. Sturmey Archer hubs are reputed to last forever, so perhaps the problem is the shifter?

I'm not surprised at an 11 mph average. I've ridden the Cincinnati Red Bikes, and they aren't geared for hills, and have very heavy, dead tires. And he was pulling a trailer. I see he swapped the saddle, the stock one would have been impossible.

His web site & blog hasn't been linked yet: countribike.com

The blog posts are pretty entertaining.

He rolled through Cincinnati (blog post here) last fall, but I didn't hear about him until December.

Interesting. Our bikes have two gearings;standard and lowered. The lowered ones are rare, but def spinnier when going down hills.

I thought you had SA 5's. The bikes in Seattle have those. We've had alot of issues with SA 5spds,but almost none with the 3's(the Bromptons and one model Handsome have 3's). Esp odd in that 3rd gear is 'resting';the cable is slack. Maybe it's the cable run?

I think the San Francisco terms are that if you don't return it within 24 hours they charge your credit card a $1200 replacement fee.

Yeah, Cincinnati Red Bike is the same. Lose it and you owe $1200.

Does anybody know the details of his correspondence with the bike company? He very well might have called them and worked out details for a "publicity stunt" before picking up the bike. Of course, it could all be intentionally shrouded in mystery.,

I'm not sure the value of the publicity of having the bike out of its normal range, but as people mentioned, it does show a lot of what can be done on the bike.
