You ain't kiddin'! That's why I got rid of mine. I had to pay to do so.

I grew up in Manhattan. We didn't have a car in the family. I didn't learn to drive, as I didn't feel the need. I went to Boston University, and people there looked at me as if I had two heads, with no car and no license.

So you are driving to work; welcome to the Commuting sub-forum (haha)...

Once or twice a month. Most days I bike to work, and the car just sits at work instead of home in the meantime, and if something comes up during the day, my wife can call me and I have the ability to pick up the kids from school.

Three cars and a motorcycle. Ride my bike to-and-from work 98% of the time. Sometimes I do short errands via bicycle evenings and weekends, but often times those trips are far enough away, involve hauling things or would just take too long where I'm not motivated enough to do it via bicycle.

Of my vehicles:
  • 2002 Saturn SL - Wife's main car for commuting, and what I'll usually use for the above errands if she's not using it.
  • 2004 Ford Expedition - Hauling things that won't fit in the Saturn (i.e. my son's string bass) and traveling with the family.
  • 1999 Yamaha Road Star - Used to be my main commuter before I started riding bicycle. Now it sees most of its miles on my yearly motorcycle trip.
  • 1924 Ford Model T - Not driven very often. Completely restored. Was the car my grandparents courted in and all their kids learned to drive in.

I would not call owning a Model T "owning a car" - it's more like owning a vintage artifact. is it street legal?

It's street legal in regard to being grandfathered in. I.E. the car never originally came with turn signals, seat belts, etc. Because it never originally came with these items and was street legal at the time it was built we're not required to bring it up to current standards. We do have it licensed and insured.

It's fun to drive around in, however a bit scary for the newbie because they didn't start standardizing controls on cars until the Model A, so this thing drives completely different from current cars. If you press your foot down on the pedal on the right you'll just be sitting there because that's the brake. If you put your foot down on the middle pedal expecting the brake, you'll be surprised that you're now moving in reverse. If you depress the leftmost pedal expecting the clutch, you'll be moving forward in first gear. And don't get me started with the hand controls and shift lever.

If you break 30 mph you better hold on, because it feels like you're doing 100!

That's closer to the truth than you think. I drove one several years ago, and found it to be not much different from some older tractors and forklifts.

I agree. Heirlooms don't count unless you use them more or less as you would any other car.

What you call "smug", I call spending a lot of time enjoying life and feeling right about where my money goes and my impact on the environment we share.
