WOW: someone is messing with my lock

I have two heavy chains I use to lock my bike. they probably weigh 15 lbs combined. I leave them in the rack at work since I am the only one who rides to work.

the last three Mondays, I have arrived to find that someone has poured syrup(like maple syrup) all over my chain and locks.

what is going on?
I find this so annoying. I haven't been told I have to remove my locks and until someone tells me as much I WILL NOT take those locks with me. Im not carrying 20lbs of chains on a back pack home.

Is there vegetation nearby? Some pesticides are mostly sugar water...

Maybe you should report it to the building, rather than here. What can we do about it? If it were me, I'd cover the locks with a trash bag. Or set up a sting operation.

Im just venting.

I reported it and the patrol guy said he would go by that area more often. Obviously hasn't worked.

next thing to do would definitely be a sting operation of some kind.

Real maple syrup would be expensive...

I leave my locks at work too - thankfully no problem. Although I store them on the old rack that nobody uses. There are a bunch of abandoned locks I'd like to cut off, but they don't quite cross the inconvenience threshold.

Can you borrow a game camera from someone. You'd have to find somewhere to mount it, but it would show you what's going on.

Get some business cards of a well-known lawyer (possibly a civil rights lawyer) or a print advertisement for some lawyer and post them conspicuously by the bike rack along with a placard announcing "video surveillance in progress, please continue to help me build my case against you."

Got any enemies at work? This sounds personal if it keeps happening.

I doubt it's maple syrup. Probably just an asshat messing with you. I wouldn't sweat it.

Also, leaving them on the pole/rack/whatever does leave you open to this and that's part of life ...

people get jealous c'est la vie.

I have no helpful insight to offer, just want to say that I'd be really bummed too if this was happening to me. Some people just get their jollies from passive aggressive behavior I guess.

A few thoughts:

Have you tasted the "syrup"? May provide some insight.

How would you describe your observation? Visual, as in heavy syrup applied only to your lock/chain, or just a bit of stickiness that you can feel when you touch it? If the latter, it could be a natural sap dispersed from nearby vegetation. Try feeling nearby objects to see if they are the same.

Are you saying that you clean the lock/chain up so that no residue remains only to find it reapplied?

Odd that someone would go to this amount of trouble to target you, but if they really wanted to mess with you, they would use super glue in the key holes.

Also, perhaps it's a thief repellent. No self-respecting thief would want to get their hands sticky (and leave their prints everywhere)

Um... I'd advise against tasting mystery substances a vandal smears on your stuff. Even if it does end up being mostly maple syrup, you have no idea if it is all maple syrup.
