tripple, half of my commute is up a big hill (literally for 4 miles) and then half my commute is down the hill (for three miles).

My main commute bike is a 53/42/30 with a 12-26 cassette. As I've admitted in other threads, since I live in pancake flat Sacramento, I'm riding around with 26 superfluous gear combinations.

One of these days I'll get around to getting a single speed or fixie. If I could ever recover my old Schwinn World Sport that was stolen about 10 years ago....

I started on a 2005 Hardrock, so I feel ya. My road bike is so much more fun to ride!

currently riding an old double roadie. If I keep this up I'll get a single speed, prolly with flip-flop to try out that fixed thing.

Hello,

My commute machine is a Surly XC (franken cross).

at the moment Im using a road double 52/39 off of a another bike But I just ordered a triple as My ride home is 60% climb no matter which way I go home.

Hmm I thought the bike trail would be flat but I was wrong , its only flat when its along the river.

so a triple it is.

All mine are triple except the Buzz and Surly. I'm usually on the Sedona or Absolute, although the Sirrus is going to start being the one and only once I get fenders sorted. It's too hot right now,but this fall I intend to ditch the knobbies on the Surly and start going SS for the workout.

Don't get me wrong... I love my bike. I'm just wondering how the difference between a road vs a mountain bike. I'm guessing a world of difference, eh? What kind of road bike did you get?

Off road Commute- 33:19 mountain bike
On road Commute- Triple ring roadie

Up and coming wet weather bike- drop bar mountain bike with slicks. In a month my job will be moving, and I will nolonger have the off-road commute option. I am still up in the air about the gearing. Right now it is a single speed, but I am curious to try fixed gear. I just need to find a cheap wheel.

Usually I commute on a 40 X 16 SS (not a fixie). So with the choices given my answer would have to be "none of the above".

I have a tripple chain ring, but due to BB and crankset mismatch I can't shift to the granny ring (and I really don't miss it so much). The large ring is 42 tooth, don't know about the middle. I have a long hill down on my way in, and even longer (or so it feels) on my way home.

I'm commuting on a 2003 Hardrock (22/32/42). Current modifications to make it more road-like are 26 x 1.5" slicks and bar ends. This week, I'll be installing my new Surly 1x1 rigid fork to get rid of some excess weight and most importantly, allow me to get out of the saddle on climbs without bobbing all over the place. I have two road bikes (both with triples) but prefer the mountain bike for commuting as it's cheaper to replace and the wheels and brakes are stronger (lots of potholes, steep downhills, and rain).

Bikes: A brand new Trek cyclocross and a very old Schwinn road bike with a long interesting history. Ask me if you want to hear the whole story.

Specialized Rockhopper, Nitro c/c drop bars, barcons, Nashbar steel fork, semi-slicks, fenders, rack, panniers, triple. Most components Deore/LX. Don't need the granny commuting but it's nice to have around for touring. I think the triple's a 44/x/x, I don't know I haven't counted 'em lately. I had a 48 on it but swapped back after getting a fast(er) road bike for club rides, etc.

After riding my road bike on my commute a few times, I remember the beauty of my beast...(lower-end) mountain bike components do much better with dirt, grime, water than (lower-end) road bike stuff. (I'd imagine its true with upper-end stuff too, but I haven't done it!)
