Offered a stolen bike

Hey guys,
Sadly I was offered a stolen Diamonback MTB yesterday by two 16 year old kids (Don't know the model, i think it may be a Topango or a Vectra if anyone has had one stolen). The situation threw me. All i did was mutter no thanks and then report it to the police. They didn't seem too interested, even when i told them that the bike was more expensive than most cars in the area. It happened near a shop, should i have just grabbed the bike and shouted that they were trying to steal it? People would have come out to look at why a big guy was screaming. They offered it to me for A$250, so they obviously knew nothing about the bike (They are/were about A$1500). I was furious that these kids had the bike, that the cops didn't seem all that interested, that i didn't just beat the ****e out of them and take the bike to the police station.
I feel so sorry for the poor bugger who lost his bike, it was a new, beautiful bike. Makes me re-think buying a newer, nicer bike...

[/rant]

What would you all do?
Anybody in Sydney heard about someone losing a bike like that? I can give more details if so.

Yeah, should have smacked 'em and taken the bike to the police station.

I started reading your post and assumed it was from the US, until I noticed the currency. I always thought of Sydney as a very low-risk area when it came to bikes. That sucks. Where abouts was it?

To be depressingly honest, I probably would have reacted in exactly the same fashion as you. The idea reaction would have been to grab it and insist on bringing it to a police station, but that requires damn fast thinking and the ability to look like a looney in public.

Would have reacted the same way. Total bummer that kids can be that brazen these days. (that sounds like something an old fart would say, and here I am a middle aged snot nose punk. AARRRRRRRGHHHH)

Look at the bike, try to remember the serial #, get the kid's phone #, then call the cops.
