Ok so this bike is at a big LBS in town:
Actually I want this, but money is an issue for a commuter.
Retail for the Sub 20 is $629. They have it on sale for $450. This store is a big local chain so I was thinking about being a bastard and offering like $400 since they have several in stock. I feel kinda bad doing this but I'm a college student and I need that financial aid money to last. You guys think I'm outta line here?
I'd really like that Sub 10 tho. Not sure if they'd make me a deal on that one because they don't have one in stock.
All Bikes All The Time
The fact that the store is a big chain actually serves to decrease your chances of successfully negotiating a better price, imo. There is very little local pricing autonomy (ability to think and act for oneself) afforded to local managers of chain stores. I doubt you will have any luck at all if it is an REI or something.
That being said, $50 off a $400 bike is not unheard of and if the entire chain is local, that might be entirely different.
It's not a crime to make an offer. If the store gives you **** then we know who's the real ass. You just need to realize that everyone's gotta make a buck somehow.
