Do not go the wrong way between cars..

So another bone headed stupid move today that probably would've gotten me killed.
Here's what the intersection looks like (my path is in blue, theirs in red). It's 6 lanes of traffic, everyone has the red light except for the guys making the left turn. So I decided to rush it and go between 3 lanes of moving cars. Unfortunately I neglected to realize that some cars might actually want to change lanes and this cab pulls head on in front of me, I dodged it by about an inch to the left as it jammed on its brakes and I kept going... Never again..

Well as long as you learn before hand, that's good. I presume the float to the left was to avoid the cab. Let's see if I understand this:
-- 3 lanes both directions
-- traffic moving slow enough you can slide to fast lane
-- you're in fastest lane and have to emergency exit to hard left

-- you decide to run red light.

If correct, forget that being illegal. Safety first. Not paranoid about safety, but the only situations I would consider running red are:

-- clear road for emerengy vehicles
-- light not triggered by bike and no ped crossing button
-- escape from idiot charging from rear

90 seconds is simply not worth 2 weeks of road rash.

Anyway, glad to hear both you're safe and still riding and sharing both good and not so good riding decisions.

Honestly, I don't know why I do stuff like this, it's ********. And the ironic thing is, I'm the biggest safet geek ever. Helmet, helmet lights, gloves, front and rear lights, neon clothing, neon socks, neon orange bag, glasses.. I really have to work on this whole patience thing.

LOL, that's typical of Slvoid. I rode with him a few times, and when I'm around, he's riding safe already. I can just picture him riding on his commute.

HiYo, what is this "triggering light" thing you're referring to? They should put those triggers in NYC.

Anyway, don't know if you've been to NYC before, but traffic is ALWAYS slow. You can normally move 3 lanes pretty easily during rush hour. Slvoid moved left because there were cars in the middle & right lanes stopping for the light (I'm assuming). He wanted to blast through the light, but couldn't because too much traffic ahead, so I think he decided to cut 2 lanes to the left where there's a hole so he can blast through.

What's the matter dude? Disc brakes not powerful enough to stop? Hint: Maybe upgrade to R6 brakes up front (lol).

Also, check out that picture. You noticed how the red arrow is moving in a smooth, predictable path while the blue arrow is just erratically all over the place.

I'm just waiting for you to, one of these days, tell us how you were following a Porche that had to stop real short and you had no choice but to bunny hop on the rear of a 997 Porche and ride over his roof onto the hood and bunny hop back down. That would be something....and knowing you, I would believe that would be something you can do!

Your stories make my day. Brings a huge smile to my face while I'm here in my cage...uh, cube.

Just because you live in NYC doesn't mean you HAVE to be impatient . Or suicidally insane.

If you hadn't nearly gotten killed, I'd have thought that was the funniest diagram I've ever seen.

I can understand about running out of patience riding in that kind of traffic every day, along with the things the cagers do to you. Be careful. Leave for work earlier?

I can see a book deal coming..........

"Slvoid's tips and tricks for riding in NYC"

tip #17 put HF acid gel on your bike for theft protection.

tip # 24 wear LOTS of coconut scented suntan lotion!

Just upgrade to Juicy 7 disc brakes. And no I can't imagine NOT splitting lanes, heck that's one of the few advantages we have.

Actually I'm waiting for slvoid to strap on a Buck Rodgers Turbo pack

LOL. just imagine what kind of day that poor cab driver had. All of a sudden, dead 12 o'clock, his entire field of vision gets filled with

I can't make any sense of your diagram at all, but I do know it looks like you just pulled the stupidest move I've ever heard of.

It's not the red, not the blue, that are so worrysome, it's the parts that are purple.

Is slvoid really Lucas Brunelle?

maybe i'm just traffic-challenged. i'm the first to admit that's a strong possibility.

Maybe this explains it better...

I couldn't make across the moving traffic to get to the 3 lanes on my right (going my way) so I squeezed between the first car, thinking... well, I didn't really have a plan at that point, and just rode head on into 3 lanes of traffic...

Honestly, I'm usually pretty safe. I mean, I've only had the bus incident and this, otherwise things have been pretty orderly.

lol. maybe all that neon is off-gassing and you're inhaling too hard when you ride. there's so many different ways to be stupid, though - trying to miss them all is like trying to ride between raindrops.
