No pitzips and non breathable is a no in my book as you'll roast. I think you'd be better off with a proper sports jacket with vents and a safety vest over it.

I have an older north face jacket that I enjoy using when its nasty out. It doesn't have pit zips, but instead has vents / mesh pockets vertically on the front, which i really like.

The color is nice but I would be looking for some good breathable jacket. This one would get my vote if you are willing to spend the money.

good luck

Get a Burley. If not that, make sure it is bike specific, with longer than normal sleeves (since you are bent over with your arms out in front), vents, and no hood.

Oi! You will roast in that thing, plus as soon as you ride the waistband will be up around your ribcage. Try something like this. Waterproof/breathable, reflective stripes, designed for cycling.

I second the Burley. very well-designed, cycling-specific jacket, but it's expensive. great and very visible day or night with liberal amounts of reflective piping. I have used mine for 3 years and it's towards the top of my list of good purchases.

I recently bought a shell jacket from Eastern Mountain Sports and it’s working out very well. Gor-Tex, breathable, waterproof like the dickens. Pit zips, closure at the wrists, fold-up hood. I can beef it up with warmer under things and peel them off if it gets warmer. Main thing is, it cost a lot and I picked out a color that I can use all the time for non-biking stuff - It came in a gray color which I chose, but also came in some brights. For biking, I put on a runner’s vest over the jacket, which is not really a vest, but straps that click on and give me all the reflection and bright color I need, practically 360 degrees worth. It also works welll for cross country skiing, etc.

Its funny this came up. I stopped at the Perforamce Retail store after work tonight looking for fall/winter outerware and I have to say I was not impressed with most of what they had. I thought a lot of it was glorrified and over priced underware tops or nylon wind breakers, which can be found cheaper at other outlets. Alot of it did not look heavy enough for rides below 40-45 deg F. I am thinking to myself that there is no inbetween: either go cheep with cotten and nylon or go high end with Gortex. From what I hear it seems that there is enough of jump in performance with Gortex to justify its cost.

Always go with your first impression. It's hi vis (there are enough ninja cyclists already) and if it gets too hot, you can always unzip the zipper some. I'd stay away from biking apparel which is usually too expensive. In fact, I think it's a good idea to avoid buying anything my LBS sells, and since they sell gortex biking jackets, it's best to avoid them too.
