Time passes by way too quickly in the morning...

Anyone notice this?
Takes me 45 minutes to get ready to leave the house in the morning when I can get ready to go home at night in like 10 min.

I find it a bit easier in the evening as well, because everything I need is in front of me. At home in the morning, it can be and is spread across several rooms.

Defintiely laying your stuff out ahead of time will help. Otherwise:

Figure out the things that you need to do to get out the door.

Come up with the best sequence to do them in and set it up as a routine.

Follow your routine and keep track of the time that it takes.

Adjust your routine as needed.

In the morning, its dark, you're trying to be quiet to avoid waking the S.O and kids. You're not firing on all cylinders yet. In the evening, you're rarin' to go. Also, looking at my morning, I empty the dishes, have a bowl of cereal, sometimes feed a bottle or change a diaper. All these interuptions add up. When you're leaving the office, you have everything with you and you change, pack, and go.

I agree. I do my best to lay everything out the night before. I have everything sitting and waiting on the couch for me which cuts down a little time. But I do have to take time for cereal and fixing a water bottle which takes time. Plus I'm definitely trying to be quiet. The S.O. is not quite the morning person that I am.

Even if I lay out stuff in the morning I have to decide what exactly I will take with me, based on the latest weather forecast. At work, I don't have much of a choice, unless of course I spent the time in the morning preparing. Heh.

I lay everything out the night before for cycling, grab my work clothes, and make my lunch. Still, it takes me 30-45 minutes to get out the door. I have to wait for my meds to kick in for my stomach to correct itself. bleh!
In a perfect world I would be able to jump on my bike 10 minutes after I have gotten out of bed.

You get ready to go to work slower than you get ready to go home.

And you're somehow surprised by this?

Excluding other morning stuff, like showering and eating breakfast, I have to: get dressed in bike clothes, make lunch, select work clothes, collect books, pack everything. When I'm going home, I have to: pack empty lunch containers, change clothing, pack work clothes. It's not just motivation, there's less to do.

Yeah the morning is slow, and unlike others who say their S.O. is not quite the morning person they are; my wife is simply not a morning person. You have to make you lunch and find clothes in the dark, this takes time.

It takes me maybe 5 mins. more to prep for cycling than if I took the subway. That extra 5 mins. is spent packing whatever shirt I'm gonna wear at work and the elevator ride w/ my bike to the lobby and getting it up to the street. After that, I gain the 5 mins. back cuz subway + walk > ride to work. I wear regular pants and shoes and a coolmax/techwick t-shirt for riding. If it's raining, that doesn't add any extra time since I'd take extra time to dress even if I wasn't riding. Or I'd telecommute.

And on long rides it always seems to take less time get home than it did to go out. Same for car trips too.
You do have to do more in the morning, but there is something about getting ready to go out that is different than coming back. The passage of time does seem different for me, always longer to go and shorter to come back? Our perception of time does seem to change. Welcome to the "Twilight Zone" ladies and gentlemen.......

I'm not a morning person at all. It seems like it takes me approximately forever to get out the door in the morning. Even if I set everything up the night before, and even if everything goes smoothly.

It's just that I'm about as sharp as a bowling ball in the AM.

My 3yrs old daughter always wants to play in the morning and I have to oblige! Of course, when I leave the office, I am doing my best to get away from people.

One other thing is that my average speed TO the office is much lower on the way BACK home. In the AM, the air is clear, everything is nice. I like to look at my surroundings. On the way home, it is dark, LA drivers scare me and so I concentrate on the ride. Also have to get back to play with my daughter!

the most useful gadget i have is a wireless thermometer in my bathroom, (with sensor outdoors)

i can see temp, humidity, chance of rain (does ok with this), in a glance, without opening the windows or sticking my head outside from second floor where i get dressed

love it and use it every morning. 34 yesterday at 6am is a lot different than 45 today at 6:45

Try this one morning you have to get up early:

Put a non-digital watch with a second hand right by your bed. Right when you first wake up, pay special attention to the second hand; it will seem to move very, very fast, because your brain literally isn't up to speed just quite yet.

Tried this the other day, was amazed with how well it works...

Ya, but nobody cares what I look (or smell) like when I get home. (At least, I don't think they do...)

I'm a lot more careful of how I pack my work clothes in the morning. My pressed shirt needs to be folded in the suit bag, just right, etc... but on the way home it gets thrown into the bag and I'm out in half the time. However my ride home takes 10-15 minutes longer cause the hills I go down on the way to work I have to go up on the way home.
