how does it go? call the president?

my shifting has been borked up all week. so this morning i turned the bike upside down (no stand) in the living room, made a bucket of coffee, followed a link from the 'mechanics' forum to the park tools site, and located some screwdrivers . . . lot of walking back and forth from the bike to the computer in my bedroom.

i think i got it right. so now i guess i'd better put on the slush-gear and go try it out to see how it works right side up. crossed fingers appreciated.

Man I can sympathsize. My worn chain and cassette turned into a placement of the cassette, chain, bent chainrings and bottom bracket. It's like going to the doctor for the removal of a benign mole and finding out you have leukenia and osteoporosis as well. So with an all new drive train I'll rejoin the commute on Monday.

Better than thinking you have a bent rear wheel, and it turns out your aluminum frame is twisted about 10 degrees.

THAT's like going to the doctor for a headache and finding out your legs need to be amputated.

I'm sitting here with a really clean chain and two sets of quick/power/speed/master links that won't fit a 8 speed chain. How about that one!

: no worries, unkchunk. the intention came through. wow, you people have so-much-bigger problems than mine that i almost feel self-absorbed for reporting.

i still seem to be 'missing' the smallest cog on the cassette. not sure what to do about that - it didn't seem like the limit was wrong, but any time i adjusted the cables the skipping on the other cogs would come back, so in the end i just said eh. the main thing worrying me was all the skipping on those rear cogs last week, plus on the front some kind of displacement that had the sides of the chain rubbing against the . . . forgot the word. the metal bracket-type thing that guides the chain back and forth. i fixed both of those, plus i seem to got all the other gears working beautifully, so wow it feels good. at least it's running smoothly again and shifting properly to the gears that i have, so i'm actually pretty happy for a first try from an optimistic amateur. no more chatter, no more skreek-screek-rub, each gear in its appointed turn . . i think that rather than go chasing that last gear tonight, i'll just sit here and drink raspberry liqueur.

on the downside, i dropped a glove somewhere while i was out admiring how nicely it worked. darn. nothing's perfect, i guess.
