I rode with son to parade today

Today being Veterans Day, I decided to check out my son's traffic riding skills by riding with him to the parade. There was no parking on the route of the parade except, gasp!... bike racks. We parked right on the route, and were home before most spectators had gotten thier cars from where they had parked blocks away from the route. My son understands how to ride as a vehicle, not bad for a 9 Y/O. There was a recumbent trike riding amongst the art cars in the parade; I guess the banana body work qualified it as an art vehicle. Even though it was a day off, an 8 mile round trip is my commute for the day as it was a day for my son to learn what service in the military means in our family as well as our country.

That's nice, you were able to ride with your son--good way to bond. I just wish it were safer to ride bikes here, WE STILL HAVE NO BIKE LANES!!!

You don't need bike lanes to ride safely...

My kids and I biked down to the memorials for the Veterans Day ceremonies. We went past a line of stopped cars and rode right up and parked at a light post about 30 yards from the stage. At least around here, for any kind of large-scale outdoor event bicycle is the only way to travel. The nearby roads are often closed to motor vehicles and you feel like royalty as you zip by.

Good for you, Scott. My family and I almost always go to our local parades via our bikes for the same reasons you've given. My 6 year old rides on a trailer bike; the 10 year old rides safely in other traffic with mom and dad regardless of the presence of a bike lane or not.
