Here's the good part about bike commuting: We only put 8000 miles on the new minivan this year. I know I drive it a lot less than Mrs. Caloso so I think I can honestly say that I put more miles on my bikes than the car.

The car-free folks might scoff, but not too shabby for a middle-aged, middle-class dad. If I say so myself.

I just started in November, and have racked up 616km (383 miles) in the past two months. I'm pretty happy with this.
Hopefully I'll be able to keep it up this year.

I had some health problems that kept me off the bike June & July of 2004 so I set a conservative goal of 2000 miles for 2005. I reached my goal in September & ended the year with 3,043, very gratifying for a 65 y.o. gaffer. I'm setting my 2006 goal at 3,000 miles but I retire eff 4/1/2006 & I won't be commuting to work after that. I'm not sure if I can maintain a daily ride without the "ball & chain" motivation of getting to work every morning. Don

EXACTLY

I'm in the same boat, no idea how many commuting miles, but my truck, car, and motorcycle go weeks without being driven/ridden (my wife still drives her car but much less).

total miles for 2005 on computer: 2401 mi, 174.1 hours, 13.8 mi/hr moving avg. Probably 5 - 600 of that recreational, and another <100 on bikes with no computer. That's a mid April - mid November season and we had a very warm, dry year which allowed more riding.

I'd guess that my mileage was around 3K because my route is 4.5 to 8 miles long each way depending on the route. I got 3k as follows: 12 miles a day x 5 days a week x 50 weeks.

My HID disables my computer, so I stopped keeping track of miles I also take my computer off the bike when I run errand. In 2004, I carefully counted and got 4.5K in total miles. But it just got to be too much of a pain to write down mileage for the night, twilight, and bad weather commutes.

My bike computer's been on the fritz several times this year, including now, but I'm estimating somewhat over 2000. Best of all, I just rid myself of my personal car last month! (We still have a family one.)

Some interesting stats: At the time I'm posting this, there were 89 responses for a very rough total of 213,000 miles. (I just multiplied people by the midpoint of each range.) If they were all car alternatives (not accurate, I know), that would be a gas savings of almost $22,000 (@ a conservative $2.25/gallon and mileage of 22 mpg) for almost 9700 gallons not used. That's also almost 97 TONS of CO2 not emitted. (Except the 800 pounds in our collective breath, but that was already in the system anyway.)

Between April and September of 2005, I put 48 gallons of gas in my truck. It get 14 miles the the gallon (one of the reasons I ride my bike ). I used less gas than any of the holier-than-thou Prius owners at work! But who gets their pictures in the company newsletter every year? And who doesn't?

The company isn't interested in someone who bikes to work? Mine was. I got my picture and story on the company intranet for a while this summer. It's still unusual enough to make for an interesting story, I guess.

The lady who does our newsletter hasn't sweated outside since the Carter Administration. Her idea of activity is to drive to Vail and sit around a fire drinking, not skiing, just drinking. She has no desire to associate with people who go outside to sweat!

I work doing research on alternative energy but we are only interested in fuel and cars. Nonfuel users just aren't interesting enough to get coverage. We have around 50 year around cycling commuters (out of nearly 900 people working here) and about 75 to 150 seasonal ones. But, then, they just ride bikes. They don't drive shiny new cars, so they aren't important.

I managed 2000 miles commuting and 300 miles of serious off road riding plus I did the London Marathon so that took up the first 4 months. This year my target is at least 3000 miles but it couls be a lot higher if I move to a new place this year. The area I'm looking at is about 15 miles from my work so I could get a fair bit of extra exercise, if so then I would be looking at about 7,500 miles.

4000+. Bicycle-commuted every day this year, but don't have exact mileage since it's all mixed together: 7019 miles total, of which about 2100+ was on rides of a century or longer. Round trip commute is either 15 miles or 21 miles, depending if I cheat a little and drive the first three miles (avoiding a lot of hills--I usually only cheat on days with heavy snow or if I'm sick). Figuring 48 weeks of work with avg 18 miles per day gives 4000+

All that riding sure wears out bike parts. Still a lot cheaper than a car.

Bike and Jeep combined mileage = 70 miles a gallon

Cost of Jeep + Bike = 7,125.

Cost of Prius = 40,000 or something crazy like that

I think I am ahead ...

... roger that!

No big expenditure = no big attention.
For a market driven planet, the big spenders will get the attention for buying more glorified golf carts.
I rather drive less something I like , and bike the rest, than to piss money away into the newest electric turd.

Actually, I like the idea of hybrid technology. It has some advantages over conventional internal combustion. I've tested heavy duty hybrids on our dyno and I'm very impressed. Cost is still too high but they are still impressive. But I don't think they need to be listed in the company newsletter every year or given tax breaks (where's mine ).
