Brilliant quote from Bicycling mag: Keep your head up in case a car pulls out...
Over the past couple of years I've enjoyed Bicycyling magazine - a present from my mom, don't think I'd ever pay money for it - and I've gotten some good info from it. And I give them credit for promoting commuting like they have, but I can't believe what I read in this month's edition in an article title "Bike Town - Get To Work - Now's The Time To Start Bike Commuting" - on page 36: "To turn your commute into a workout, do intervals at traffic lights: When the lights turn green, sprint like mad to the next red light, where you'll rest. Caution: Keep your head up in case a a car pulls out of a side street in front of you." That's really wonderful advice, and I'm sure when all the bike commuters read this that the number of cyclists being hit by cars will decrease dramatically!

Yeah I laughed when I read that too . I mean, no *****, like we're really going to be riding with our heads down in traffic. Bicycling Mag's advice often seems misdirected, and I wonder who their articles are directed toward. I think any cyclist who is serious enough about the sport to pick up Bicycling Mag, would be a seroius enough cyclist to know how to ride in traffic. Sometimes it's almost like they state the obvious to put it out in the public, even though only cyclists read the magizine.

If there were no driveways or side streets between lights, but a ton of potholes, would it be safe to sprint with your head down?

The only time I sprint on my commute is if the light is yellow when I'm rolling through the intersection.

It's interesting that they run an article aimed not at Lance wannabes and weekend warriors, but at working stiffs considering biking to work. The advice might be old hat to folks that ride to work as par for the course, but it's a revelation to newbs.

Anything that gets them out of the SUV is a good thing.

Wait, a minute. Could it just be a obivous caution notice like when airlines tell you how to buckle seat belt. Most anyone knows to keep tehir head up, but it just might be a good little thing to remind cyclists who only use trainers.
