Merry Holiday to me and thanks to you all

I followed several recent threads about carrying stuff
(backpack/messenger bag/pannier etc.) looking for ideas for upgrading
my ten-dollar clear vinyl Office Depot backpack. I digested what I
could, visited a couple stores, and a few weeks ago finally
committed. Circumstances have kept me off the bike since then, so I
have delayed the report until I had taken the maiden
voyage with my new Ortlieb waterproof messenger backpack.

I was agonizing over several choices among the Ortlieb and Chrome
options. I think I would have been happy with any one, but I could
afford only one, so I decided to maximize my primary requirements
(waterproofness, comfort) and let go of the less essential ones
(coolness, easy access).

With this, my only piece of high-end biking gear, I think I finally
can call myself a three-season-certified bicycle commuter. Now I am
turning my attention to that difficult fourth season in a quest for
the coveted all-weather bicycle commuter patch.

There's a patch? Nobody told me about a patch! Who's in charge of these patches and where do I get one?

When the rain means nothing, when you shrug off cold like a polar bear, when your driving coworkers think you've completly lost your mind, and when you can inwardly laugh at them for being wusses then you're an extreme commuter!

Well, there really are no patches. It was an idea I had once to motivate myself. I wanted a rain-capable patch, darkness-capable patch, winter-capable patch, etc. But I don't have the physical or creative resources to make them. So I just drop the reference now and then. The reward will have to remain internal.

If anyone else can make a patch, I'll buy one.

The only patches a real commuter needs are right there in the pucture repair kit.

Can the patch have a cyclist eating a donut on it? Or a big piece of pie? Can a slice of cherry pie be considered lunch?

Maybe the rest of us would have less of a hankering for a magic patch to get us through the hard times of 'all-weather' commuting if our weather were like the weather near the california coast. Now commuting in Fairbanks, Alaska, year-round... now that is all weather commuting. (Summer temperatures up to a not too scorching 100 degrees F, and winter temperatures down to a not too scorching minus 55 deg. F, or so. Ouch.
