just finished building my 1X9..... pics.
well... I've now finished building my commuter/single track bike. I basically bought the frame, fork and extra set of wheels(all black ones) off of ebay cheaply. I had the rest of the parts down in the basement. Today is going to be my first ride.... on single track anyways. I think it's going to be a great bike for me.
the only things left to buy are a bashguard, chainring and chain guide. those will be purchased once I figure out the gearing I want to stick with. I'd like to get some black pedals... but, these will do for now.
I wanted a cheap commuter that I could go mtn biking with too.... and here it is.

if you want a bashguard go for it, but i have found them completely unnecessary in my 2 years of singlspeeding without one.
i have hit plenty of big stumps and rocks and never bent a thing.
i think if the front-d keeps the chain on you don't NEED anything else, it looks ready to rip!

Sharp bike there, but i would have gone with some other color as opposed to white, for if it will see some off road, itll get dirty quickly and often. Anyways, i hope you enjoy it!

NICE! I'm supplementing my SS Crosscheck with an old REI Novara 'Buzz' which is a 26" wheeled 1x9 roadster. Every time I ride it I start jonesing to build a replacement... except with 700 wheels and disc brakes. There's so many 29" MTB and cyclocross frames coming out with disc mounts. And I'd fit some 38mm commuter/comfort tires (like the ones on my Crosscheck) so I didn't have to worry about which wheel set to throw on. Just go with the compromise and wander wherever and whenever I please. The only thing I'm undecided on is whether or not to go with a suspension fork. But I've probably got a while to mull that one over.
But hey, congrats and a job well done.

was there any special steps you took to ensure that the chainline is not too far off. what position is the front chain ring in on the crank? I am going to be doing something similar to my old raleigh m60

thanks guys.... I'm proud of it, it's been awhile since i've built(put together) a bike.
lbthomps: as for the spacing and all... I just kept the middle ring in the middle. simple. it lines up to the 5th cog in the back which is the middle of the cogset(9sp). it works great. I'm thinking of going up some teeth to maybe a 36T and see how that works. and as for the bash guard... it would only be for aesthetics anyways, so i'm not sure i'll put one on there. but, I really would like to put a roller guide on there instead of fixed position front derailler. anyways...

Try a 42 up front. That should get you around with a little top end in reserve... unless you have some big @ss hills to climb on a regular basis. My Buzz came with a 42 in front and I'm usually in 4, 5 or 6.

If you use it offroad too, the middle chainring would suffice (32 or 34t). Thats what i run on my full suspension, which I just converted to 1x9. You'd need something a bit higher to keep up with traffic on the road for commuting, though.

to be honest... I plan on commuting with this bike, and riding off road with it about 2-3 times a month(depending on when my buddies want to ride mtn)
so, I'm thinking about trying a 36t up front.... and i might go bigger, not sure yet.

for you 1x9 guys: this is what i was thinking..... on my hybrid, I would commute with a full load and use anywhere from 11-30 in the back while using 38 up front(never used the granny gear and sometimes used the big gear. well.... i've got 11-34 on the bact of this 1x9... so, am i correct with my thinking that a 42 up front matched with a 34 in back will be the same as 38 and 30 on the hybrid?? except for of course, the difference in the wheel size. seems like it would b/c i'm just going up 4 teeth in front and back.....
thanks again for any input.
