Weekend Riding

How many of you commuters also ride on the weekend for recreation purposes? I do every weekend in the summer, but the winter seems to have slowed down my weekend rides. What does everyone else do?

CaptainKurt99 02-07-06 08:08 AM

I hit the trails with the mountainbike on the weekends.

Provided there are no other pressing social engangements or howling blizzards then I'll get out, even if it's only for a couple of hours on a Saturday and usually Sunday as well.

One day without riding is something I can cope with but I couldn't cope without two without good reason.

It's pretty rare, but I do do it. It is almost always a familty outing to some destination, such as a restaurant, ice cream place, or county fair.

Almost every weekend I hitch up the child trailer. My son and I usually head out on a 30 mile ride.
However, if the weather is bad I skip it. Plus, I will have a lot less time to run these recreational rides now that I have money for my bathroom remodel. Next weekend I get to hang drywall and cement backing board.

jyossarian 02-07-06 08:47 AM

Sometimes I ride for recreation, but more often than not, it's to run errands.

I head out around the lake or on into the farm country. I'll start doing more group rides come spring.

Wulfheir 02-07-06 09:14 AM

I put in 100 non-commutin' kms in jan. 0 so far in feb. I want to do 1000km this year outside of commutin'. If I neglect my wife more, I can get in more kms.

max-a-mill 02-07-06 09:22 AM

one of the main reasons i started commuting a few years ago, amongst other things, to become a fitter/better mountainbiker!

it worked! this winter i have been riding every weekend trail conditions permit and i'll even start racing regularly this season.

mountainbiking and commuting are so different to me that it dosn't even seem similar (cept for those same sore muscles if/when i over do it). mountainbiking has always just been fun for me so i never miss any opportunities to go.

Usually try to get out for a ride because it reminds me how much fun my bike is w/o the heavy commuter load.

Winter is rare for me to ride on weekend, but not unheard of.
Summer its out all weekend, either riding, kayaking, or falling out of airplanes

HEY Captain! Roger that! Great to see ya! ;)
Lovely morning eh?

I commute weekdays and ride both trails and road on weekends. Did 30 miles, hey I'm new at this road stuff  on Sunday
I'm gradually increasing my miles. Gotta be doing a century by May :)

GTcommuter 02-07-06 09:43 AM

Everyday for transportation to errands or meals. I'm trying to fit in a long morning ride on Saturdays, but it's an off and on thing. Sundays are reserved for an ultimate frisbee game, but of course I ride to that.

oboeguy 02-07-06 10:04 AM

I don't particularly distinguish bike commuting as non-recreational. It's more like I get free recreational riding by commuting. So yes, of course, I ride for fun on the weekends as well.

tibikefor2 02-07-06 10:08 AM

I try to do a 90+ mile ride on one weekend day.

jschen 02-07-06 10:36 AM

I definitely ride weekends. Of course, being single helps in terms of being able to spend time however I please. I commute now because I had so much fun riding for fun, so I'm definitely not going to give up riding for fun.

mtessmer 02-07-06 10:48 AM

I have allot of obligations but I try to get out. Not much in the winter (other then commuting) except my New Years day ride and a few times here and there. In the spring, summer and fall I get out more including a number of rides with my wife on the tandem and a week long tour.

SpiderMike 02-07-06 11:21 AM

Normally I'd go hit the trails on the weekends. Right now I'm training for the MS150 (Houston-Austin). Saturday I rode about 30 miles on my Fixed gear, and then Sunday did 64 miles on my geared road bike on The Big Chill ride. My plan is to get more weekend mileage heading up the MS150.

What is getting at me is the commuting. Its just too short. Actually anything under 10 miles is getting too short. It would be like getting only one boiled shrimp, good but not enough.

joelpalmer 02-07-06 11:27 AM

Before I moved to Baltimore (from SF) I was going every weekend, partly because some friends were training for a tour. I'm still getting settled in and trying to find some rides here, but once that's done I hope to ride 30-50 mi per weekend (another tour to get ready for.)

jimmuter 02-07-06 11:45 AM

Sure I ride on weekends, but not much in the winter. Even when the weather is mild, it seems like something else always comes up. I'm planning on doing the ride across NC next fall, so I will be riding a lot on weekends and at lunch to get ready.

cgchambers 02-07-06 01:27 PM

Just moved from NC actually, there are some GREAT rides in the mountains around the Highlands Cashiers area.. if you want more details just let me know

buelito 02-07-06 05:54 PM

Like tibikefor2, I try to ride long (road bike) one day on the weekend, and weather permitting, a 2-2 1/2 hour mountain bike ride on the other day.
I hit 925 miles for January, and about 400 of them were weekend rides...

mxwalker 02-07-06 08:54 PM

I train on my triathlon bike on the weekends (or race). I find commuting really helps my racing (get to ride twice a day). I can't commute by bike every day though as I need to find time (and the energy) to run as well. I get my swims in by riding to the pool on the way to work a couple of times a week.

peregrine 02-07-06 09:22 PM

I do ride on weekends, even in winter. I think commuting's made me tougher in regards to weather conditions :D

recursive 02-07-06 10:04 PM

I ride any time I can.
