Well, sort of. I used to live at the office, now I've moved "across the street", but the long drive (I live out in the "country") up the driveway to the house makes the commute 1/2 mile each way. So, I suppose I could get on the MTB and down the gravel road (it's a decent downhill) every morning, cross the street, and ride the gravel road up to the office parking lot and do the opposite on the way back.

Lol, is there a way you could increase the distance? Different route? Loop?

Hmmmmmm, sounds like you're going to have to upgrade that bike to at least a cyclocross with fat tires to cope with the gravel, don't forget fenders for the rainy days, definitely a brooks saddle which with a 1/2 mile commute shouldn't take more than about 6,000 years to break in. Lights - HID since you're in a rural area, then there's the eternal question - backpack or panniers? definitely rack and panniers as a backpack will make your back sweaty. Be sure to negotiate the ROW with the alpha-dog icy stare and practice your dynamic lane positioning while approaching that road crossing (see A&S forum for details), and while you're at it be sure to get involved in the "extreme commute club" thread - yes you do qualify since you have an EXTREMELY short commute. Of course you will need a winter beater bike so as not to wear out prematurely your good bike, and a second set of wheels with studded tires for snow, don't forget a second set of lights and rack/panniers for your winter beater..... There, that'll get you started.

:p

Y'all are great!

Sounds pretty tough. Make sure you pace yourself. I once managed an extended stay complex across the street from a diet center. You wouldn't believe how many clients drove across the street to get there in the morning for breakfast. It became easy to see why some had weight problems!

Drag a tire and a couple cinder blocks ... that will make you break a sweat
