That famous day in history the pack of the daily commuters went riding on
And from the rear a voice was heard
A brave young man with a trembling word rang loud and clear...
What am I doin' here??

1. There's a black ice a'waitin' out there,
just fixing to take my pride
A coward I've been called cuz I don't wanna wind up more road kill
Code:
Please Mr. Custer, I don't wanna go
It's nice in my cage, please don't make me go
2. There's more icy winds a'waitin' out there,
just fixing to take my whistle
A coward I've been called cuz I don't wanna wind up another whimpy rider
Code:
Please Mr. Custer, I don't wanna go
It's nice in my cage, please don't make me go
3. There's more thorns, and glass and nails and nasty things a'waitin' out there,
just fixing to take my pride
A coward I've been called cuz I don't wanna wind up sittin' on the road side
Code:
Please Mr. Custer, I don't wanna go
It's nice in my cage, please don't make me go
4. There's smelly old behemoths a'waitin' out there,
just fixing to take my air
A coward I've been called cuz I don't wanna wind up with black lungs
Code:
Please Mr. Custer, I don't wanna go
It's nice in my cage, please don't make me go
5. There's numb fingers, sore thighs, puffin & a wheezin' a'waitin' out there,
just fixing to take my joy of life
A coward I've been called cuz I don't wanna wind up disabled or a cripple
Code:
Please Mr. Custer, I don't wanna go
It's nice in my cage, please don't make me go
Please Mr. Custer, I don't wanna go (forward HO)--aaww

Again a brave young man with a trembling word rang loud and clear...
What am I doin' here??

6. There's a steel frame a'waitin' out there,
just fixing to rust away and take my spirit
A coward I've been called cuz I don't wanna wind up cracked up
Code:
Please Mr. Custer, I don't wanna go
Listen, Mr. Custer, please don't make me go
7. There's an aluminium frame a'waitin' out there,
just fixing to beat me up
A coward I've been called cuz I don't wanna wind sore and achey
Code:
Please Mr. Custer, I don't wanna go
Listen, Mr. Custer, please don't make me go
8. There's an carbon fiber frame a'waitin' out there,
just fixing to disintegrate and take my face
A coward I've been called cuz I don't wanna wind dead or mained
Code:
Please Mr. Custer, I don't wanna go
Listen, Mr. Custer, please don't make me go
9. There's an titanium frame a'waitin' out there,
just fixing to take my money
A coward I've been called cuz I don't wanna wind penniless and broke
Code:
Please Mr. Custer, I don't wanna go
Listen, Mr. Custer, please don't make me go
Please Mr. Custer, I don't wanna go (forward HO)--aaww

I wonder what the injun word for friend is
Let's see-friend-- kemo sabe, that's it
KEMO SABE!, HEY OUT THERE-KEMO SABE!
(sound of arrow whizzing by)
Nope, that itn't it
Look at them durned cagens
They're drivin' around like a bunch of wild donkeys--heh, heh, heh
Nah, this ain't no time for jokin'
(sound of arrow whizzing by)
(sound of arrow whizzing by)

Please Mr. Custer, I don't wanna go
Listen, Mr. Custer, please give me a new song in my head

Please Mr. Custer, I don't wanna go (forward HO)--aaww

For actual words, see a site like https://www.digitaldreamdoor.com/page..._mrcuster.html

Recorded by: "Larry Verne"
(peak Billboard position #1 in 1960)
Words and Music by Fred Darian, Al DeLory, Joe Van Winkle (Indian drums throughout song)
(Indian war whoops)

Suggestions for better songs to carry in the head while riding are welcome.

Suggestions for other verses, or verse rewrite would be welcome.

Don't ask me for suggestions, I pedalled around with Puff the Magic Dragon stuck in my head for the better part of two weeks. Making up new biking related words to the song does seem to help drive it from my mind.

You could try "She wore an Itsy Bitsy Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" or "Gypsies Tramps and Thieves" or maybe the "Sloop John B". Maybe its time we pool all of our rewritten songs into one biking related songbook.

This is a great idea. It would be fun to read on some downer days.

Here's a short little ditty I made up in my first season, to a simple tune which I also made up and subsequently could not get out of my head:

Oh, you don't wanna mess with a garbage truck,
That's something you don't wanna do.
No, you don't wanna mess with a garbage truck,
You don't, I'm tellin' you!
You don't wanna mess with a garbage truck,
'Cause if you do you're gonna be outta luck,
No, you don't wanna mess with a garbage truck,
'Cause then your days are through, boo hoo,
'Cause then - your - days - are - throughhhhhhhhhh!
That's the family version. For an alternate, slightly more comedic adult version, substitute another word rhyming with truck for "mess", and say "S. O. L." instead of "out of luck".

Guitar chords available on request.

Thanks an awful lot for that one! I'm glad I had the presence of mind to toggle off the speaker before pulling it up on my cubicle computer!

I also sometimes get stuck on Queen's Bicycle race, which at least is somewhat appropriate.

Bangin' on my bongo all that swing belongs to me
I'm so happy there's nobody in my place instead of me
I'm a king without a crown hanging loose in a big town
But I'm the king of bongo baby I'm the king of bongo bong
King of the bongo, king of the bongo bong
Hear me when I come, baby, king of the bongo, king of the bongo bong...

I'm usually singing willie(highway man or on the road again)... or big john(author/singer unknown), which is an older song which is one of my favorites of all time... I'm a ****er though.

Last Friday I was riding home across the Golden Gate bridge as a cruise ship passed under. I stopped. I waved to the newlyweds and nearlydeads. Next thing I know "The Love Boat" theme song is stuck in my head. It reappeared this AM as I crossed into work, and again on the way home.

Ohhhhh the agony......

Mr. Custer is nice. THE SONG THAT MUST NOT BE NAMED is painfully familiar to anyone who has been on a certain ride in Disneyland. Try making that one funny.

During summer, music from cars with windows down would do that to me. I finally got an ipod because someone was playing "Brandy" at a stop light and I couldn't shake the melody all day. Oh no, it's happening again.

Sometimes it can be good though. Once, I got started with "Theiving Magpie" and it turned out to be a good song to have stuck in your head while riding.

I had a NIN song stuck in my head yesterday. I think it was "with teeth".
At least lately I have not had annoying songs stuck in my head.
