Extreme commute club: week 21

I put slicks back on my bike tonight. I'm sure that they will come back off before spring arrives for good, but the roads have been clear and dry for many days now. Can't wait for tomorrow to try them out again!

Thanks to everyone who posted pictures last week. Tibike and Velogirl, remember that you promised some pics this week! I thought we could try this little game: write a haiku about your commute. The baisc rules for haiku are that it is a non-rhyming poem three lines long. It should have 5 syllables in the first line, 7 in the second, and 5 in the last. A reference to a season is a plus. Obviously, if you break some or all of the above rules, nobady is going to care.

Here is mine for today:

The merciless wind
Blows the tears back from my eyes
Squinting, I still ride.

I was thinking about those cold winter mornings when the wind is blasting away and your eyes are watering from the cold. I get icicles on my sunglasses sometimes from that. I can feel their tracks as they blow back on my cheekbones.

Tibike, I'm not sure, but I think I see a couple or square inches that are not reflective -- Tsk Tsk!!! Seriously, that is a nice looking ride.

Mars -- what is this a homework session? I haven't thought about haikus since HS English class! I'll have to give this some thought -- perhaps its good material for tomorrow morning's ride.

Eyes watering from the cold wind is my improvised thermometer. If the tears actually run down I know its not that cold. If they freeze as soon as they move beyond the shelter of my glasses, then I know its cold. There have been a few days riding around here that remind me of cross-country skiing in Upstate NY long ago.

Well I've replaced my brake pads over the weekend and now I'm ready to ride. With any luck I got the alignment right so I can skip the squeal. Forecasts around here have the possibility of snow on Tuesday so spring is not here yet. I'm just hoping the winds die down.

Tibike: The big chainwheel looks bigger than normal - optical illusion? The entire bike also looks very short - do you get toe overlap?

And what is that grey thing on the tri bars?

These are not to criticize - I wish! (How do you clear drool from between keys on the PC?)

+1 nice ride!!

My fellow VLC/XCC'ers my apologies for not getting my commute pictures posted, I promise this week I'll put some up, along with some bad poetry....

In other news, I rode a century on Saturday on my new road bike, I thought it would be a good way to get better aquainted with it. Apart from desperately missing my aerobars it went very well, I only wish I'b brought sone tools to do a few adjustments - the seat was 1/2 inch too low. I'm surprised how good I felt afterwards, I could feel the compliance in the carbon rear end & seatpost absorbing the harshness out of the bumps. I only averaged 17.5mph but I'm sure that will improve.

Enjoy your week, be safe.

Howdy all. Mars, I just put my slicks back on. WOW I forgot how fast that bike is! With the Nokians its such a dog....

Here's to 50% chance of snow on Tuesday.... lately that just means that it snows just enough to make the streets wet on the way home. Not enough to warrant studs, let alone anything more than a slick...

Thanks for the nice comments on my bike.

The bike is quite fun to ride, the titanium dampens a lot of road vibration, this is also the best climbing bike I have ever had.

The frame is a compact frame and has a virtual 54cm seat tube (hey I am only 5'7"). I get minimal toe overlap probably due to my size 8 shoes.

The big chainring is a 52. I also think that the big chain ring looks bigger than normal. I think that this has to do with the minimialist design of the crank.

The grey thing on the side of my aero bars is a little nob which is where I mount my headlight.

Luckily I do not have to lock up my bike at work, as it resides 5 feet from my desk.

This will be my only day commuting this week, as I head out this Thursday to Arizona and New Mexico for a 1 week bike Tour. I will post some pictures from the tour.

Hope everyone has a great week.

Go Blue Devils!!

My love Joshua
Not an ideal commuter
My love remains firm

(my only bike fisher Joshua X1) -the singletrack, the pavement. the only difference is the tire pressure and suspension torque.

That's what they tell me all the time JUR. And I wished I had the view you have on your commute.

Mars, Gald to see you having fun on the road tires again.

Well I going to build a bent bike tomorrow. I going to make a mock up frame tonight. And then start the real frame tomorrow. I am using my MTB wheels and some road tires. I still have to get a crank set for it. But I should have everything that I need for it. OH, and I have to get a chain, I have two but think I'll need one more.

I did not work today, and have the next two days off. But I did ride to the doctors office for a nice 12 mile fun ride. I pulled the seat up 2.75" today. I read a post about the seat height and it said that the seat height should be 35" X .883 = 30.9". I had it at 27". Now I feel like I'm standing up on the bike LOL. I did get it up to 33.5 MPH on the way to the doctors.

Here is my mileage for the huffy. I got it on the 1 of March.

I finally came up with a couple of haiku offerings

Studs on. Studs off. Argh!
Miyagi says practice, Ha!
L.A has no snow

Eyes water, tears freeze
Nose runs, glasses fog, toes numb
Joys of winter rides

Waiting to see what the predicted dusting of snow turns out to be. Other than that just a chilly but uneventful commute this morning.

Some awesome haikus everybody! Such good writers here!

CigTech, make sure you post pics of your recumbent building process and finished product! That's a pretty impressive project. I hope it turns out
