Tampa St. Pete Commuters?
I’m about to move there and wanted to find someone who may cross the Gandy bridge (the old one) on a regular basis. The approach looks nasty to me.
I will be traveling form NE Saint Petersburg to Ybor City.

Just for future reference when visiting relatives out there ... which bridges are open and which are closed to cyclists?

The Old Gandy Bridge was redeveloped into a bike/ped bridge when the new bridge was built. Most people drive to one of the parking lots on either side of the bridge and use it for recreation. The aproach to the bridge is a 55 mph zone with a wide sholder, but it's still 55mph an hour! Anyone know the side streets along the bridge to try and avoid the high speeds!!!??!!
To answer LCI Brian’s question…the Old Gandy is the only bridge that I know of in the area that you can bike across. I-275 had not bike access. The Courtney Campbell Causeway has bike lanes you can access from the East or West but they do not connect in the middle. So no crossy. Anyone know different?

nope I beleive Gandy is the only one you can cross, and that one closes at night (either at sundown or 7:30, can't remember). How far north in St Pete will you be? You can always ride up around the north side of the bay... (like up to Tampa st/Hillsborough). Long ride though

I ride down Gandy from US 19 everyday on my way home everyday. When Im feeling good I go all the way to Tampa and back before going home. Never had a problem with the 55MPH traffic going down Gandy. One of my weekend rides always includes a ride to the Gandy bridge.

I come up 1st St N to 83rd ave which turns into San Mateo. There's plenty of shoulder to ride on until you have to cross over to the start of the trail. There's plenty of big breaks in traffic to cross.

Thanks! I start this commute in a couple weeks. Good to hear there are breaks in the traffic. I will be going 1st St N as well.
