Can someone explain waterbottle options to me?
I've just started trying using a water bottle. The cages don't seem to hold them in well. The bottles fly all over the place and I'm not going to chase a bottle in an intersection. What's the secret to getting those cages to work? Do only some waterbottles work?

Ok, well... did you buy your bottle from a bike store, or are you just trying to throw an Aquafina bottle into the bottle cage?
I checked mine at the bike store before I bought mine, made sure it held that sucker tight. I suggest you do the same, if it doesnt fit, just go get a new one. I paid $9 for a 24oz insulated bottle, which keeps my water way cooler than the non insulated ones.
You could also camelback it, but then everyone on the forum would make fun if you for not being a "true roadie"

Some cages have a springy action and others have a loop.
The springy ones need to quite secure to avoid "debottling". Plastic cages are pretty useless for this style, stick to metal.
The loop ones are very secure and plastic works well. My Elite cage is glass-reinforced nylon and has secured a waterbottle/battery over rough tracks for the last decade.

You might try smooshing the cage down a little. Some cages are looser than others. Try it at home and smoosh a little at a time until the bottle is a little tough to get out. Don't deform the bottle (that's smooshing it too much ) but it should hold it relatively firmly. It should almost feel like the bottle 'snaps' into place. If the cage is aluminum, try not to bend it too much and don't do too much bending back and forth. Aluminum has a yield limit.
Of course, if all else fails, there's always Camelbak.

Cost about $4.50 for cage. 50¢ for hose clamps, 38¢ for 1½ L. water bottle (w/water). Bottles last about 4 months with twice daily refills. Bottle Cage (from Copper Canyon Cycling) is about six years old. Also will securely hold 2L Soda Pop bottles.
Bonus: No stomach turning plastic smell like stinky bike specific plastic water bottles.

I buy the cheapest cages available, and use what ever water bottle the LBS gives me. I also press the cage to make it snug. I've never had a problem with bottles falling out.

If the fit is loose, squish the cage until it's snug.
