How much clearance should I have between fenders and tire?

At least 1/8 inch, a quarter inch or more would be better. My Planet Bike fenders have 1/8 clearance with my 700x38 tires and often pick up bits of gravel which get caught between the fender and the tire quickly getting spit out the front. When I install the 43mm dirt tires I have to take the fenders off.

In heavy rain with water running across the pavement the front fender does not extend far enough forward and much bigger mud flaps are needed. Next rainy season I'll fix that and try some 700x32 tires.

I like to set the fenders up so the clearance is tightest at the back. I figure this way anything that's stuck to the tire will hit that tight spot first. If it's big, it will be knocked away, and if it's small enough to fit, it will pass all the way through the fender. I figure this should also help prevent the fenders from getting clogged with snow in the winter.

I'm not sure if this actually makes a difference in practice, since I don't generally get things stuck in my fenders anyway, but I figure it can't hurt.
