Good shops in Detroit?

I'll be in Detroit (Farmington Hills) for the next two days. Any good shops that cater to commuters? I am planning to go to REI and test riding a Novara Fusion.

Hello! There is a place in Ann Arbor called 2 Wheel Tango. They have a good supply of racks. I bought an Old Man Mountain front rack for my commuter there. No one else carries Old Man Mountain. It's good stuff.

There are two REI's in town. The best one is the one in Northville....nearest to where you'll be. They were having a sale on bags just a few days ago....25% off. I don't know if it still going on.

There are three more bike stores in the Northville area, here is a listing.....
-----------------------------------------------
Continental Bike Shop (Not really by Northville, but worth the stop if your into Road Bikes. They've got one of the best reputations in town.)
Work: (248) 545-1225
24436 John R Rd
Hazel Park, MI 48030

Note:
M 10-7
T-W 10-6
Th-F 10-7
Sat 10-5
-----------------------------
D & D Bicycles (Run of the mill Trekkerized Cookie Cutter Bike Store)
Work Address:
121 Center St.
Northville, MI

Note:
Mon-Fri 10-8
Sat 9-6
-------------------------------
Town & Country (Run of the Mill....Specialized, Cannondale...etc)
Work: 248-349-7140

Work Address:
148 N Center St.
Northville, Mi 48167
-------------------------------
Trails Edge (More into Mountain Biking......Smallish Store, but great since I bought my Nokian Studded Winter Tires for Commuting from them. Only place in town geared towards winter biking stuff)
Work: 734-420-1200
Work Address:
15095 Northville Road
Plymouth, MI
--------------------------
Two Wheel Tango (Lotsa Racks)
Work: 734-528-3030

Work Address:
3162 Packard Road at Platt
Ann Arbor, MI 48108
-----------------------

There really isn't just one Commuting store here in SE Michigan since commuting is not really big here. The locals are either into Trails or Road Biking. Cycling here is a recreational sport.

Have fun with your stay!

I'm not sure I'd consider Trails Edge smallish anymore since they moved to a bigger location (within the same strip). I'd agree that they are primarily MTB focussed, but do have Road & CX products as well. They also have rentable workbench space available incase you need to give your ride a tuneup.

I tend to visit this LBS when I'm doing a weekend ride on Hines Drive as it is on route... (many a group ride center on / or include this road).

I do agree w/ Silverexpress' opinion on Two Wheel Tango's selection of racks... It floored me when I went there for the first time a couple of weekends ago.

I'll second the recommendation for Continental Bikes. Large selection of bikes, excellent service and very knowledgable staff. Fantastic shop. Well worth the drive to Hazel Park.

American Cycle and Fitness in Royal Oak just made a move. They are now located on Woodward just North of 12 mi (East side of the road).

It's gotta be one of the nicest setups/layout in regards to SE Michigan bike stores.

They are now known as a Trek store, but I've seen other brands inside.

Checkit out!

By the way, how did things pan out for the original poster of this thread???

I didn't make it to any of the shops you listed. It was a work trip and I just ran out of time.

I did make it to REI and rode a Novara Transfer, which was great, but the only size they had was too small, and they lack a chain guard.

I went to a shop called "Pro Cycle Center" in Livonia since it was just down the street from where I stayed. It was a Trek/Giant store. The great part about it was that they tons of parts. Unlike anything I have access to here.

I've got this thread bookmarked, as I'm sure I'l be back this summer.

Off topic: Trader Joes is great, I wish we had them here!
