Bike Rack at Work Full Today

What a great problem! I could barely squeeze my bike into the rack. One fellow worker is a former road biker, and gave it up because of some health problems, but is now successfully riding a recumbent. In the winter, there are only two of us, but now there are dozens!

It's still just me- the ride out to my job is too hilly and through too many ghettos for people to attempt it.

Racks are busy here too, but I expect demand to fizzle away as temps go from the low 100s to the 105+ range.

They seem to be fizzling out here already. A couple weeks ago the rack was full most days. Today, I'm the only bike there. Jeebus. It's like the best commuting day ever here weather wise.

2500 employees in this area, and I am one of two bike commuters. And the only one at my facility.

Well, I have the bike rack all to myself and probably always will. It is pretty messed up considering we have almost year around weather for cycling here in the Duke City.

If I'm sucessful at getting my fellow employees to try bicycle commuting, I'll probably have to try and get a bike rack here. Right now, since I am the only one, they let me park my bike in the employee break room.

I've run into a full rack at work a couple of times already this year. I hate it when this happens because it means I have to make the extra effort to wedge my bike in and lock it up. Noticing that about half the spaces on the rack are taken up by, apparently, abandoned bikes (they haven't moved in over a year) I mentioned it to security.

On one hand I hate to get them involved in policing the bikes. Who knows - they might start booting them like they do with a vengeance to cars in our employee parking lot. On the other hand - the spots are for commuters not personal storage.

Bike rack at work? lucky you ^^ here in Tampa FL. there are none and nobody would want to dodge the 8000 crazy cars on the road and pass the 50+ busy streets to attempt it.

I don't get it? Are you implying that biking to work does not occur in Tampa or are you saying that parking a bike on a bike rack is where the danger is?

Im saying that working where I work, a bike trip is a health hazzard, and because nobody bikes to work you wont find a bike rack to put your bike in.

I would bring mine inside to lock up anyways.

I really evaluated the whole trip to work yesterday when I got off work to see just how many busy streets I have to cross, Its doable. I have to cross the interstate area and be around ALOT of traffic (rush hour traffic when I get off work :/) I would definitly have to ride on the sidewalk there just is not enough space to have a real "bike lane" on the main road. When ever I do see sombody on a bike on these main roads its on the sidewalk. The lesser roads people are actually on the side of the road like they are supposed to be (somtimes) It's actually illegal last I heard to ride your bike on the sidewalk... I can maybe see why if you had alot of people on bikes hogging up the walkway, but for main roads like this where your risking death via mac truck every .2 seconds on the main road I will be on the sidewalk trust me.

I walk my son in a stroller about every other day in my nehborhood, even in a no traffic area you will find people biking on the sidewalk, it doesnt bother me any, they always go around you and give you the right of way or even go on the street for a moment till they are around you.

I had my only serious wreck in Tampa. On the North end of town, I was riding South on Fowler (I think that's the name), and a woman pulled right out in front of me. I ran directly into the side of her car. My bike was mangled, and I was lying near the curb. She opened her door, looked right at me, didn't say a thing, closed her door, and drove off.

I commuted for 9 months there by bicycle, and this was the only problem I ever had, but it was a memorable one.

I agree. Even though there are no bike racks here where I work, I'd bring my bike inside anyway. I like having it next to my desk.

It sounds like you're in an area that you'd really need to plan your route out well. I have no fear riding on just about any street I come across, but I do enjoy the lesser traffic ones more (as do most, I'd assume).

Look out in the parking lot and you may also see more motorcycles. I think current gas prices are drawing alot of people towards two-wheelers of all kinds.

Rack usage was high, overflowing, last week & early this week. But today was a small fraction of past days at ~2 bikes.

Could be because temps from Mon. to Wed. went from 99, 100 to 102. Today is forecast 103. These highs stick thru the PM commute time (yesterday at 7pm was still 101)

Here in the office park slum by the airport in sunny Regina Saskatchewan there are a total of TWO, TWO bikes on the bike rack on a beautiful spring day with temps well into the 20C range. The parkling lot is jammed with the usual assortment of cars, 4X4 trucks and SUV's. The belly aching over $1.10 per litre gas has died down, I guess people are just sucking it up now, and driving one person per car to the office, then driving out for a coffee brake, home for lunch, etc. It makes me want to puke, god, I hope Peak Oil theory turns out to be true, these people need a kick in the arse!

In other news our corporate leaders have decided to move the workers out at the affore mentioned office park slum back downtown to the headoffice, to which the whinning and complaning from my co-workers is neverending. Boo hoo hoo, then they will have to pay a whopping $6 a day to park their 4000lbs of steel in the parkade after their 5 to 10 km drive to work. No sympathy here.

unfortunately, the bicycle rack disappeared from staff parking lot nearly a month ago - it is only myself and one other person that rides to work. (he lives 6 blocks away so easy ride) I have permission to park my bike in the utility closet and the other guy locks his bike to fence by back door. I may have convinced someone else to ride tomorrow for Bike to Work Day. I posted two posters in staff break room re the bike to work week.

I have a funny feeling that those cheap Chinese scooters are going to get more popular in the cities long before bikes do. You can get a good quality Geely Falcon scooter with a 50cc 4-stroke engine for $900 shipped to your door. And they are very reliable too. They are easy to maintain, and repair parts are cheap. They can go about 35-40mph all day long, and have lots of little trunks and storage space too.

Lazy America will find a way to prevail over those who choose to pedal.

BTW, I am seriously considering one of these for running around town on the weekends when my legs are recovering from my weekly comuting.
