advice on getting a Giant bike: 00' TCR1 vs 06' OCR3

hi all,

I am looking for a new bike to start commuting, and getting to work fast is important.

Choices: used 2000 Giant TCR1 for $650 vs new 2006 Giant OCR3 for $600+

which one should I get?

thanks, all!

I own and commute with an 05 OCR 3. I have no complaints doing an 11 mile commute each way.

I really liked the '06 OCR3 when I test road it a couple of months ago. Have you been able to test ride the bikes? How you feel is the most important thing.

If this is going to be your one and only bike, there is something to be said for getting it new. If you are adding to a stable, you might want to get the older bike and tinker.

(The advice is just pouring out of Massachusetts. Any other states want to weigh in?)

i guess all the guys are out on Saturday, on the bike instead of being in front of a computer.. :)

Yup I test ride the OCR3, awesome bike. The TCR1's on craigslist, haven't tried it yet.

Sounds like the OCR3's more the logical choice, since the last bike I had was a walmart $50 one, and I am fairly new at biking.

I own an 05 OCR3. I used it for my commute (15 mi each way) until I built my Surly cross-check. The OCR3 is a solid bike, rides well, and should be an excellent commuter for you. I just have this thing about building things, so once I got into cycling I had to build a bike from parts. I still have my OCR3 and use it for road rides since the cross-check is a single speed.

The TCR is more race oriented and therefore will have better components. The OCR being more of an entry level bike will probably give you more options (fenders etc..). I think the wheels on the OCR will probably be more sturdy (32 spoke) for commuting also.

Either way enjoy the ride...

Weighing in from Austin TX.

The OCR is a much better choice. The frame is configured for a slightly more relaxed riding position compared to the TCR, and the extra tire clearance will allow bigger tires that will be more comfortable and a little more resistant to flats.

My son bought an OCR3 last year. Its been a great bike. If doing it again, I'd go with an OCR2 to get the 9 speed components. TCR isn't really a commuter type bike. You race those puppies.
