I take up the whole right lane on a street that's two lanes in my direction. I stay in that position for several miles. The only time I've been corrected by a police officer was one day downtown when I kept changing lanes to avoid potholes and construction, and even then, the policeman was very kind (though I would have appreciated him noticing the potholes and construction.) This is in an area where I see police cars from several jurisdictions on a regular basis.

I'd take it up with his station. The side of the road is not the place to argue about the finer points of law with an officer. You will most likely lose that exchange.
