    Car crash NEXT to you?

Anyone ever have a car that was traveling next to them crash into a stopped car because they were paying more attention to you than to what was in front of them?

Seems like about once a week I get overtaken or am riding next to a car that figures, "this guy is on a bike, I should be going faster than him." They speed up or, better yet, gun the engine, paying attention to passing me and not looking forward. They have to slam on their brakes as I go to the right of a line of stopped cars. I've probably only had 1 or 2 cars really lock up their brakes trying to stop, but never seen an accident.

This probably happens to you too. Any actual accidents from this phenomenon?

Yup, three times. Funny thing was, I was driving my car all three times. Just goes to show cagers need to be ahead of you no matter what you're riding/driving.

I've seen it a couple of times - always in a car though never biking. Once I thought I was going to see it. pickup coming up behind a mercedes. not sure how but the mercedes looked like it jumped 90 degrees to the right - up on the curb as the pickup slid into the spot he just vacated. I swear there was no apparent forward movement form the merc. incredible miss that one.

On a fairly busy street here there are two sets of red lights very close to each other, and they are simultaneous with each other. The light turned yellow at the first (as well as the other up ahead) and this guy in a van decided he better floor it! He made it just in time!!... but he forgot about the other light, and the line of cars in front of it. Locked up the brakes and slid right into the back of a waiting car.

i've had a car crash next to me, scared the crap out of me. But it wasnt due to me cycling by them. Just walked to the crossroads at the wrong time. Police going one way, car going another, builders van the 3rd way, and an ambulance the 4th way. Police and ambulance passed each other going through red lights in opposite directions, the car driver going through a green clearly was spooked and turned to "avoid" the police car and ambulance flying through the cross roads... turned right however and plowed straight into a builders van who was also spooked and trying to avoid the emergency vehicles too. I could touch part of the wreckage with my outstretched hand.

It was the first time I thought "so this is how im going to go." its was definately a scary situation. :|

I've distracted drivers before, but it usually happens at stop lights. I'll be behind them and I can see them looking in their rearview at me when the light turns green. I just yell beep beep or start going around them if nobody is behind me.

I've had a driver on my right at a stop light rear end the car in front of him by punching the gas the very lamb shake the light turned green. I don't know if it was because of me or not, as the very same thing happened to my wife in her car (she was hit from behind by a driver going before she did at a stop light) I half think it's just the all pervasive idiocy that has gripped our once beautiful country. As accidents go I would think it could be the most embarrasing thing you've done with your car, but it doesn't cause much damage and probably the insurance companies never get notified, which is to bad beacuse it means other than the embarassment there is no punishement for being stupid. Something I believe strongly in.

When my wife got hit she was fifth in line at the light and waiting for the car in front of her to start moving. The one I saw was the fourth or fifth car hitting the one in front of them. Idiots.

I've had a couple of crashes right next to me while riding in the last year.

I have no idea what they were thinking/doing to cause any of them.

This very thing happens to me on a regular basis. The closest call I've seen so far happened earlier this week. Guy passes me with no regard to the traffic in front of me that's stopped. He locked up the brakes and cut the wheel to the left, barely missing the car in front of him.

I've been riding on the right side of a rather narrow road that has one lane in each direction plus cars parked along the edges (but not enough room to pass a bike safely). Sometimes cars passing me make dangerous swerves into the other lane and almost hit oncoming cars -- I think they don't realize I'm going 17-20mph and that they really need to gun it and cover some ground before they're past me. It's kind of a no-win situation for me and the cars. I want them to be able to pass me and get back up to 35mph, but I ain't gonna get doored for their convenience. The good thing is, I can avoid that road on my route, so I usually do.

I was very close to an accident once, while cycling - but I doubt I had anything to do with it.

Not in the same way, but I've been riding next to where a car crash happened. This was going uphill from Edgewater to Fort Lee, where it is very steep. Car pulls out of driveway on the other side and crashes into a downhill driver. I got kept riding as it happened almost behind as well as next to me (I saw it about to happen though) and there was no way I could stop on that narrow bit of uphill road with crazy car commuters behind, annoyed at the cyclist chugging up the hill.

Not under that senario. But I have seen countless "fender benders" where a car pulling out into a busier street misjudges the traffic flow and has to reverse back, hitting the car behind them which had moved forward into their previous space. I don't think I was the cause of those, but some of them were only a foot or two away. I've got to get a helmet cam. Maybe I should make a stencile and mark each place I see an accident.

ive had a thread worthy story-
As normal, im traveling on the far right lane, and cars are going by me, well i see a bit ahead, a light turning yellow, so i gun for it, quicken my pace in a effort to clear the intersection before the red. Well some women in a car, situated in the middle lane had similar intentions, she wanted to get through the light. Im just about about half-way through the intersection, and the women in the car, who had been a bit behind me going into the intersection, had been almost parellel to me at that point, and i catch a glimpse of the ligh flikering from yellow to red. Oh well, i think to myself, should have pedaled a bit faster, but just as i finish that thought, I hear "greeewwwwwwwhhhhhhggggggee!", and the women in her car who had just been along side me had come to a screeching halt. Just as im wondering what was that all about, i see the front wheels turn right, and she accelrates hard, and screamed ou her open window something like "efin cyclers". It turns out the women had assumed she was going to overtake me from the middle lane, and cut across me in the right lane, but clearly misjudged my pace. Luckily i wasn't hurt so i just pedaled on.

Jimbo, sweet story. Where was this?

I remember another barely related story: on the Riverside Drive viaduct, while headeding south, a no0b on a high powered motorbike showed his no0bishness by being unable to turn on to Riverside, instead ramming straight into the side of parked car.

If im not mistaken the incident went down on one of my rides in the city, on one of the main avenues, one that was 4 lanes wide, no bike path or bus lane, i wasn't particular on the actual cross streets, i just wanted to ride in the city, so intentionally ignored the street markings in an effort to get myself lost and to provoke a little exploration.

On a few occasions, I've nearly hit another cyclist in front of me due to my attentions being overly involved with a car next to me.

One time in Encinitas, I felt badly. A motorist yielded to me at a cross walk. She acted a little indecisive, go or not. I told her to go ahead. She continued to yield to pedestarians. Had a bike roof rack on her car.
The car behind her was less patient. He assumed she was going to cut off pedestarians at the cross walk. It was a few moments after the pedestarians got the go ahead to walk. ( A busy urban setting, so I was walking my bike.)
She was smacked in the rear by the impatient motorist. I felt lousy. I had motioned for her to go, being I feared I did not have enough time to cross safely.
I changed my mind, took off on the side street in the opposite direction and shock my head disapprovingly at the rear motorist. At least, I think she was innocent.
I still had the right of way the cross walk sign was still not flashing.

My two close calls for me were not while commuting per se, but I was on my bike...

The first was touring in Japan. I was heading through a long dark tunnel on a mountain road and was about 300-400m from the exit. I only had a rear blinkie and a weak front LED at the time. I heard a car coming from behind to over take me. And at the same time I saw another car enter the tunnel in front... without his lights on. Since my eyes used were to the dark I could see him, but I was sure that the car in back didn't. There were a few seconds where I was just thinking "Oh crap, oh crap". I could tell that both cars were going to meet up in a car-car-bike trifecta in a narrow tunnel. As the car behind me was passing, the guy in front flicked on his high beams and the car next to me slammed on the brakes and steered back into my lane. I don't know how he missed me. Gah! I hate tunnels without curbs! There is no where to go!

The second, back in France, was on a bike ride outside of town. A woman decided to pass me while I was cresting a hill. I saw the car in the on coming, lane; she didn't. I threw myself into the ditch over the handle bars as she slammed on the brakes screeching the tires. At least she did a u-turn to see if I was alright. But more to give an excuse: "the brakes are new..."

    Yeah right!

Sorry for the long set up, but so that you get the picture...part of my commute is on a 'designated bike route' which around here means an extra wide two-lane urban feeder road, but with no painted bike lanes. This spring I was coming up to a school zone stop sign where I turn right. There was a line about 20 cars deep waiting to turn left at the stop sign to pull in front of the school to pick up kids. I was riding slowly up the right hand side along the column of cars, about two feet from the curb. I was basically utilizing the extra width of the designated bike route and staying out of the door zone from the cars along my left. There were no streets, alleys, driveways or parked cars to the right of this section of road, but I still am always leery of a mystery right hook.

Sure enough, some boob decided that I shouldn't able to use the bike route to move up the right hand side of the line of stopped cars. He apparently decided to take matters into his own hands by pulling out diagonally to the right to quickly place his car in front of me. I first saw him craning his neck and looking up at me in his mirror as I approached, then picked up the motion of him turning his wheels to the right. I was already unclipping and gliding to a gentle stop as he goosed it to angle his car over to block me.

The problem was that he had been creaping forward a little while he was looking up into his mirro at me, so that when he hit the accelerator to lunge over he heavily plowed his left front end to the rear right bumper of the car waiting ahead of him. He hit hard enough that the contact lifted him about a foot up out of the seat. The impact pealed the right rear shell off of the bumper which in turn pealed the right rear quarter panel off of the car. I just sat there about two car lengths back at a stand-still watching all of this.

The best part was that at this intersection there is always a police officer directing traffic to help with the congestion. He pretty much saw the whole thing so the guy was completely busted. I never did go down to get a copy of the accident report but at the scene the cop was already giving him a serious ration of shiznit for reckless driving and endangerment in a school zone. The last I heard was the cop asking the guy if he suffered from road rage as I walked my bike up onto the sidewalk to pull away. Served him right too. I still see this same cop and always wave to him when he waves me through on the right hand side so that I can make this turn on commute.

Poetic justice, rule. Thanks for that story.

I just don't understand why somebody would get so worked up over a bicyclist being able to filter up to the front. If he really is so jealous, why not get his own bike so he can enjoy it too? Honestly I will never understand the lemming-like stupidity of people who sleep-walk sheep-like through life. "Must...drive...car...because...that's...what...everybody...else...does..."

Rule, Nice. This reminds me of something I almost had happen a few months ago.

On my ride into work, I take a left at a stoplight off of a 2-lane-each-way street (though there are no lane markings other than the center divider). One time, with no other cars around, I moved over to the left lane about 300 yards from the intersection. A black Mercedes comes barrelling up, overtaking me on my right, and cutting closely in front of me. I was pissed. At the intersection, with the light red -- and with 2 lanes of cars facing us going the opposite direction, the car in the left lane waiting to take a left in front of us -- I pulled up to his driver's side window and yelled "what the hell was that back there, you cut me off!!" He said something like, "I'm driving a car and you're driving a bike, you s!!t head." He was probably pissed too, and when the light turned green, gunned his engine as and he came very close to ramming into the first car coming out of the opposing outside lane. He slammed on his brakes to avoid hitting them and got a hornfull from the other car. I yelled, "That's about right buddy!!" (but of course have thought of about 10 other things I would have rather yelled since.)

    Justice almost served...
