Strange Sights Seen While Commuting

We all see some unusual sights and some are worthy of sharing. Like yesterday, I parked my bike outside a bank, needing to visit the ATM when I spy a young woman riding down the very busy road, approaching the bank, with crutches strapped to her back. Watching her, I noticed as she dismounted she wore a full cast from just below the knee. She locked her bike to a pole and, perhaps forgetting she had those crutches strapped to her back, proceeded to hop on one foot into the bank. Now, there she was a determined cyclist if ever I saw one. Nothing was going to discourage her from riding.

That lady probably figured out that she can ride a bike but can't drive. I once had a procedure done on both my feet. I could not walk or drive, but I could crawl to my motorscooter and ride. Ahh! The freedom of mobility!

2 six foot black snakes doing it. I just had to stop. The last 12" where all twisted up together. Kinda looked like the caduce.

The unicycle remark reminded me of last Sunday when I saw a father riding his bike on the sidewalk, but it was understandable as both his daughter and son in front of him were both riding unicycles. That was so cool. They were very good riders.

I've seen a lot. One time, not on a commute though, I saw some copperheads attacking this bird.

A buck from the local mountain park chasing several does across the putting green at a local golf course.

Hoof holes just the right size to swallow golf balls.

It wasn't a unicycle before it was locked up...

More reason to lock 'em up like Sheldon Brown!

I saw two naked men walking down the bike path. To each their own, but please inside of a house, tent or at least behind a bush.

My work hours are not that common so by the time I reach a portion of my route that's popular among the roadies it's around 3pm and fairly secluded. I approached an SUV parked on the side of the road with a guy changing his clothes. His bike was leaning against his SUV so I figured he just finished his ride. He had his back towards me as he changed his shirt and kicked his shoes off. He kept looking ahead of him as if to make sure no one was coming in the other direction, but why he didn't turn around to check behind himself was beyond me cuz he then proceeded to take his shorts off baring his full a$$. I stopped pedaling just so my back wheel would make the loud clicking/whirring sound and he immediately turned around with his eyes as big as saucers. As I passed him, I couldn't resist and said, "Nice tan," and kept going.

Another time I passed a very slow-moving car with the driver's arm sticking out the window as she "walked" an Afghan hound. The dog was at a trotting pace. Now that's the epitome of laziness (the driver, not the dog).

I don't think it's really strange anymore, because it's happened so much now. But over the years I remember startling many people on my bicycle because it's so quiet. They'll be walking down the sidewalk or street, and just as I pass, they'll jump. I've had people turn around to see what was behind them when I "click" changed my gears, or even funnier, hearing heavy breathing coming from behind them.

One of my first times I didn't know the stealth power of my bike, and I came up behind a morning runner carrying a broomhandle-type stick. I was still at least 20 feet away when I said, "Good morning," thinking he heard me coming up behind him. That man jumped in the air, did a 180 degree spin, wielding his broom-weapon like a kung-fu master, yelling "HA!" All I could do was say, "Sorry, sorry..."

Another morning I passed a guy on the sidewalk who was muttering something to himself, apparently intoxicated. I was riding clear in the middle of the street, but he was so startled by my passing him that he started yelling threats at me like, "I'm gonna kick your a$$," etc. Sorry, sorry...

You park your bike to visit the ATM? I just place my bike between me and the ATM, and do my stuff, and I'm back riding. Easy way to get quick cash...

There was the time I was exiting our work parking lot, waiting for a break in traffic to left turn across 4 lanes of traffic and along comes an elderly, Walter Brennan lookalike riding very slow on a 3 wheeler with his Walker stowed in the basket between the rear wheels.

If I ever have a cast put on my foot, I will have to ask to have SPD cleats attached to it

At this particular bank, there are four ATM's, all located just inside the doors of the banks, as most are here. It allows for a measure of security for those visiting the machines as you need your card to enter the doors and most muggings take place at outside ATM machines.

Last year I saw two bike riding along, one behind the other. The were carrying a bundle of 2x4's, one of them at each end, riding with one hand on the bike and one arm around the bundle.

I once passed a guy on one of my commutes cycling to work in the rain one hand on the handlebar and the other clutching an umbrella. He was going very slowly; I guess so as not to have the umbrella blow out of his hand.

There are so many moose on the side trails this time of year in Anchorage I've had to stop riding on them completely. Young brown bears come down the greenbelts from time to time and chase people around as well.

I saw a brand new solar powered trash can. Yep, you all may think you live in progressive places but we got solar powered trash cans now. So if there is a catastrphic power failure we can still use our public trash cans. Just you try that with your old world agrarian age manual trash cans. Also, it's got internal power storage so we can use them at night. Ha, take that! Just look at that handle man. Does your citiy's trash cans have a handle like that? I bet they don't. And it's so green. It's gotta be good for the environment. I pity you fools.
