Professional looking panniers

Hey all,
I am new to the forum and relatively new to commuting via bicycle. I have read many of the posts that discuss the advantages of panniers over messenger bags; however, when I view the links for the different panniers, they look like they are more for touring than commuting.

I am not looking for something "fashionable" as I am truly a believer in function over fashion, but I do need to have something presentable for the workplace as I am fortunate enough to keep my bicycle in my office. I thank you in advance for your suggestions.

Ortlieb. Any thing in that link should fit the bill.

I haven't seen an arkel samurai in person but they look positively space-age on their website.

Ditto the samurai. I haven't seen it in person either, but it looks really sleek in the pictures I have seen. And as an arkel bug owner, I can attest to the quality of their products.

Carradice Bike Bureau

I've been using one of these for the past 18 months. Very tough, very good in the wet. Very stable fixing system.

Wallingford Bike and a few other places stock them.

Lengthy review by a blogger of his Bike Bureau, worth a read.

any thoughts? i've been using them for quite a few months now and they've proven to be quite convenient for me, heres some pic's if anybody wants to see.

- the inside of the bags have a second coating of PVC coated canvas - this means they are very stiff and you can also wipe clean very quickly. I've had them PACKED with stuff and they've held up really well, not going anywhere near the spokes.

- theres a velcro flap that goes over the vertical strut of the rack, this stops sideways movement. There is also a hook that hooks to the base of your rack, this stops vertical movement - they hold TIGHT.

- They use 1000D waterproof fabric, i've had them in pretty harsh rain and didn't seem to get anything inside wet

- The top zippers allow access for the bulk of your contents, this can be flapped over and secured with velcro so water doesnt get in the zip. The flaps also mean you can expand your volume by riding with them up. The side zippers make for easy access to objects at the bottom of your bag, they also help if you're using it as a shoulder bag - you can just kinda whip your hand through to grab something.

- When the bags are on the bike the shoulder strap folds away into it's own pocket, https://img230.imageshack.us/img230/1455/ebay05rj3.jpg

- Any feedback, criticalor otherwise would be much appreciated. If anybody wants a pair im happy to ship worldwide, check out https://cgi.ebay.com.au/2-in-1-Pannie...QQcmdZViewItem
thanx
Sounds like a great design and all but if I were to make panniers I would make them more like a backpacking pack with compression straps sealed seams instead of sween zipper at the bottom which you can get your stuff out and a roll top and a top easy accessible zipper for bike tubes frame pump etc etc for me when I go on longer rides I like to have lots of water and diffrent fluids like pedyalite and gatorade and water it would be cool if you had mesh water bottle carriers on the side .This is just my idea of an ideal pannier not everyone elses or you could fit something like this on a bag

What I would really like to see is a pannier set similar to those on motorcycles only smaller. I've been rooting around and have come up with a hard sided trunk suitable for bikes, but not the panniers.

Here is what I would like to see and am working to create/invent:

*Matching hard sided panniers and rack trunk.
*just big enough for laptop on one side and misc gear on the other.
*Thin [Ortlieb hard sided panniers are too big]
*Waterproof
*Key Locks on Panniers and Trunk
*Easily Removable from rack but with Key Lock
*Built in High Power LED tail lights in trunk

Anyone have any other Ideas ?
I've fished around and have got everything figured out with the exception of finding the side boxes in the right size. Haven't given up yet, but am having a hard time with that one.

check out Ortileb - they have a couple hardcases - one in particular makes a sweet looking briefcase.

This doesn't meet all of your specs, but maybe it will give you some ideas:

Ortleib and Carradice both make pretty functional and understated stuff, but I'm not sure I understand the "problem" here. Are you looking for a bag you can show up to a business meeting with or just something to get your stuff to work in?

thank you all for your feedback. In response to the last question, my bicycle will be sitting in my office in a professional work environment, therefore, I was hoping to get feedback on panniers that looked a bit more professional and less like I am leaving work early for a camping trip.
