Bike theft video on youtube

https://youtube.com/watch?v=4ryBd0Er5...page=1&t=t&f=b

I thought this was kind of funny, for a variety of reasons. The funniest part was that nobody seemed shocked when the dude hit the ground!

Serves the news babe right for trying to do a "serious" piece on how to steal a bicycle.

I think somehow, had it not been for the NEWS TRUCK in front of the operation, bystanders would have taken more interest in someone with an angle grinder... Jesus, whatever happened to the fine art of picking locks...faster, quieter and nondestructive.

a grinder is cheating its like sure you can have 500 dollars just bike a century to get it not a problem for us it just takes longer thats all or you can get 500 dollars you just have to run the "gauntlet" (the streets that are a pain in the a** and take skill to get through ) thats analagous to picking locks or grinding em

Nope, folks don't notice. There is a video of some guys using grinders in NYC stealing their own bikes and not a single person gives them a hint of grief. I'll try and find the video to post soon.

Here's the link:

He didn't even cut through that pretty flimsy looking chain. Not that I could tell.

[joke] This is why you should carry a bottle of nitroglycerin in a anti-jitter box and chain a bottle of nitroglycerin to your chain and bike. Anyone stupid enough to steal your bike is going to have a Lt. Dan issue.

Or a small smoke nade chained to the bike and chain that goes off if tampered. The white smoke would probably make someone call the fire dept. [/joke]

Not going near that nitroglycerin stuff myself but I'm sure there are some chem/pyro experts here that know how to mix a small smoker. Those can be very handy and a non-offence defensive tool that won't hurt you or the attacker but definately would draw more attention seeing how it seems more and more people don't care much about bikes getting stolen from whatI see in the video and just in general around the place here. If you fall off your bike like I did in full view of about 12 people mid-aged and seniors on a revine path not one person even asked if I was ok as I was taking out a med-kit to fix my scrape. Even a few bikes went by and all they did was look then ride on. Well I fell twice that day cause it was wet. First time was on a wooden bridge and a jogger did ask if I was ok but the second time with lots of people no.

A few years ago I was driving on a busy interstate when a car going about 40 mph managed to get in front of me (going 70). I locked up the brakes, slid off the road, and flipped multiple times. Only one person stopped to see if I was ok, even though many saw it happen and my car lying on the side of the road upside down. I was ok for the most part, but it goes to show you how much people care about each other.

In my town that would not have happened. Example, I had 4 20" bikes that I bought at yard sales, I stripped them down to build one nice one for my duaghter. It was friday, my garbage day is tuesday. I set them them out by the curb, thinking if somebody needed them, they'd take them, if not then garbage would pick them up. 20 minutes after I put them out, 3 policemen were at my door, to check to see if I had been stealing bikes, and stripping them for parts. I suspect that a bike thief in this town would get Rodney King'd.

What was the point of that video? Was this a real theft? Was the whole thing staged?

What I want to know is where in the hell did they plug the angle grinder into for power. Are there power outlets every so many feet in NYC for anyone to use along the streets? If there are then I could see how an actual thief would be able to use a power tool to cut through a lock. If not then the idea of staging a bike theft for a news story & using a power tool to cut through the chain is stupid. Why not stage a mock theft with tools a thief would actually use to get through a lock? i wonder who's idea it was to use the power tool in this stunt anyway.

The guy acting like he was hurt was hilarious. The news lady was a total ***** about it with no sense of humor at all.

In the second video in this thread (I assume it's the neistat bros. video) the plug into an outlet in side a light pole.

Zero Enigma, I am a chem/pyro expert and you are so right about nitro, Too unstable to start with and it gets more unstable with time and heat. You are better off carrying magnesium powder, powdered iron oxide, and a firebrick cone. Separately they can and are used as art supplies. Well maybe not the ceramic. Together you get thermite and a stream of white hot iron that will cut through about anything. Little fireworks might scare off a thief but will also P O the police. Research the threads on liquified gases.

I believe those were the Neistat Brothers! https://neistat.com/ they are a hoot! They did the ipod's dirty secret site a few years back. When one of the ipod's battery ran out.

There are kids watching!!!! not like they show people getting killed all the time. I am sure they don't always say "get your kids out of the room" for all their news programs!

Wild and Weird!

Well just thinking of some deterents. As always if a thief wants something bad enough they'll get it. It'sd all about the amount of objects to deter the theif to outweigh how long it'll take to get your property. I'm of the opinion the police are good guys. I've spoken with a few and many have been good/nice to me. I have had my fair share of dink cops but thankfully it's far and few between. For the dinks I don't buy them coffee. Anyways, yes, I would not want to P.O the cops with thermite or heck even melt my bike. Tho the small amount of white smoke would be a psychological attack thinking something is going to burst on fire. If there is a way to get a quick amount of smoke then stop smoking so the wind can carry it away and not make people think the forest is on fire that's what I'm going for. Thankfully where I live the crime is not all that bad like downtown. I once in a haste locked the frame of my bike when returning books to the library but not the frame to the rail of the metal fence. I was shocked when I found out because one could have just pcked up the bike and walked away. It's not some $100 Wally bike either but a $1500 bike. That shock definately made me slow down when I lock things up now to make damn sure it's locked before I go. If I was in NYC I'm sure that bike would have been gone.

Aaa ha ha ha ha haaaahhh! Totally. It's OK to teach kids to steal bikes with an electric grinder (used without goggles), but once someone plays a joke on Ms. Serious Reporter and makes her look like an azz trying to stay in character ...

So, were they trying to prove that a chain could be cut through? Well, duh. Give enough effort, and anything is possible. The point (which sensationalistic journalism never seems to understand) is that safety and protection are about making it LESS LIKELY that a bad thing will happen. But it's never a sure thing.

When I took a 2x4 through the windshield recently, it took me 10-15 mins to flag down someone to help. I had several people honk for me to get out of the way when I became frustrated enough to stand in the middle of the road and stop cars to ask for help.
The 2 people who did stop were kind and gracious, those who did not, can rot for it.
