Care to come up for a winter visit? People get acclimised to whereever they live. I lived in Newfoundland for a few years and people here thought I was crazy wearing shorts in weather that was decidedly cool. I did notice, however, I handled the heat less well in consequence.

I love that an outside temperature above 96 clears out the MUP almost as well as rain or temperatures below 65. What a bunch of wusses. On the other hand I hate waiting at a stop light in this weather, I get miserable almost the moment I come to a stop, the light takes forever to change, and I can feel the heat reflecting of the asphalt, ugh!

Has anyone else noticed a decrease in the number of things being yelled from cars at you? I think cagers are loath to roll down their windows in weather like this.

Nah, it's not that. They know that as we turn our heads to look, they'll get sprayed with sweat.

Right across from Detroit here. 95 degrees, feels like 105; all you can do is sweat. Not sure if it's mentioned here, but it truly is not the high temp, it's the humidity that sucks. Feels like a weight on your body all the time. Tomorrow is going to be hotter too!

Case in point, I went from this heat last year in August to Mexico on my honeymoon. About 95 here, and 115 in the interior there, the 95 was much worse! (it could be the Corona talking though )

that's the small benefit of having never lived outside my home state (kentucky) since I was born (yes, I'm lame,) the weather (at least in summer) isn't much of a surprise any more.

now if i see something over say, 105 (air temp, not heat index) i'll be surprised, as that's rare around here.

Found on some exercise web site:
"Rule of thumb—drink 20-24 fluid ounces post-exercise for every pound of weight lost due to sweating"

So that means you needed to drink 80-96 ounces (2.3-2.8 liters) more than you did.

"In general though, try and drink 10 ounces of fluid every 10-20 minutes"

You didn't say how long you were out, but 6 liters = 202 oz = 200-400 minutes = 3.5-6.5 hrs roughly. So if you were out all day...

Hmm, that means my hour commute ought to have me drinking 30-60 ounces of water. I think my bottle is 24... no wonder it doesn't seem like enough.

Ah, you guys just have to commute in the heat! You have it easy!

I have to stand in a hot skating rink all day (no ice in the summer, obviously), shouting biking instruction to little kids who don't listen!

AND bike home afterwards!

And it isn't any cooler at 5 p.m. than at 2 p.m. around here these days...

Are you a mad dog, or an englishman? Even the most heat conditioned individual can get themselves into trouble this time of year. Try to ride during the coolest part of the day the hardest and stay out of the sun and off the bike during the high heat part of the day.

I love to ride on my days off at first light. Today, was the hottest day yet, here in South Miami Dade County. My commute is only 11 miles and it took me a good 45 minutes to get cooled off inside the AC at work.

OK, I'm one of those wusses. Although low temperatures don't faze me, and I'll happily ride my bike to work in seriously sub-freezing temperatures, once the temperature gets into the 90s, I'm taking the subway. I did today.

Here in New York, not only does the heat reflect of the asphalt, the asphalt gets soft. It feels very weird under one's feet.

When the heat is like it is now I like to take a little trip to Chinatown and slowly breath in the sweet perfumey scent of rotting garbage from all the restaurants. Or hangout in one of the G train stations that has the raw sewage leak running thru the station.

i love the smell of hot, wet garbage when you're riding. even better is a few day old road kill (deer, racoon, etc.). try breathing that in on the last leg of a 50 mile ride...pure heaven.

It was 86 with 80% humidity here this morning at 9:00AM near Detroit, looking for a high of 99 with about the same humidity. No need to go anymore South for me, I love the Great Lakes!

Drink and Pee, Drink and Pee, H-Y-D-R-A-T-E

I think by the time I get home, I'll be a pile of dust. You just smell everything burning. I have two bottles in the freezer for the ride home. Hopefully, the bike shop has my new brifter so I can leave the bike there overnight instead of riding it.

I'm taking the subway for the next few days. It's not the heat as much as the fact that I arrive dripping with sweat and coated in this foul greasy slime after my travels on 1st Ave. I just need a break from changing at work all the time.
