New bike weekend. 1st commute tomorrow morning
My new commuter/ adventure/ gravel bike.
the chief financial officer and I decided that my old 2012 motobecane fantom cx commuter was due for an upgrade.
So I picked up my Salsa Journeyman 650b sora. I swapped the 650bx2.1 Nano tires to WTB Byway 650x47. The bike shop added my old rack and tomorrow is my first commute. I have yet to add fenders to it, but they will probably need to be added
kinda nervous and excited for commute tomorrow.

You have any other pictures? Look amazing. Let us know your experience with those tires in the commute. I'm trying to figure out what to go with mine. I will not be able to make it to my local bike shop until the weekend to get a recommendation from them.

What pedals are those? I am in the market and tired of buying cheap Performance pedals annually because they're the only ones that take clips & straps, but then the bearings poop out in several months. Should I just give up and go back to platforms?

Nice lookin bike! Those tanwall tires are a slick look. In this particular shot the lighting makes the Salsa logo almost invisible, for a clean unbranded look.
bigben, my recommendation is to look for Wellgo MG-1 or MG-3 pedals, I've gotten 3 pairs off eBay for $20something/pr, and they've all been very solid for me.

It was not my first commute ever. It was my first commute on this bike. Round trip was 29.6 miles yesterday.
@noMotor? yes the CFO definitely surprised me by allowing this purchase.

@RubeRad yeah the logos are all pretty subdued on it the front headbadge is blacked out and blends in nicely too.
@bigbenaugust they are performance pedals. clips on one side and platform on the other. They may be heavier but they sure work for bike commuting or riding around the 'hood with my son. ultimate flexibility!
@slater5mvp I really like them for the commute. I do see a bit slower speed but not too much vs 700X28mm gatorskins but these are nice and smooth. (not sure how much is wider tire vs carbon fork) I went with the byway over the horizon because sometimes I like to take the gravel path around the lake and knobs seem to help. I read a review for them on riding gravel dot com and the byways seem like better with no trade offs for the knobs on the side. The only other pictures I have are pre- commuterization. here are two basically the same but I do like the color in the sun.

Oh yeah, those replacement tires look a lot nicer!
I also like the detail of the stripes on the fork; it is visually pleasing (to me anyways) that they align with the moving tire

yeah my son asked me "what the colors meant?"
as far as i know it was just for style... but as I looked in my sock drawer a lot of my cycling socks match those colors haha

Veteran commuter here, but on my first commute to the new job (old bike, new route) I went over the handlebars in total darkness at 5am, bruised a few upper ribs, and smashed my deltoid real good on a boulder, and then had to change a flat at a temperature of about 40 F. It was a new route on a local MUP and I didn't see/notice the path turn abruptly, even though I had 2 headlights (one on the bar, one on the helm). In hindsight, a daytime recon ride would've made sense, as well as being a little less cocky about my night-time commuting skillz.

@RidingMatthew I just felt like sharing an anecdotal story about a "first time commute" gone bad. I'm glad your's went better than mine.
At the time I was pretty far from OK, but I was just moving as fast as possible before the increasing numbness in the fingers made the flat change really, really difficult.

I broke a spoke on the way home. I think it is because the city had shaved the road down for repaving. I hit a joint one the way to work and on the way home the spoke broke. i will take it to the shop today. hopefully they fix it today. 353 commuting miles so far

353 miles to a broken spoke? I don't think I've ever gotten less than 400 miles before one broke. :/
Ask your shop to tension and stress-relieve both wheels correctly -- or get Brandt's "The Bicycle Wheel" and a spoke wrench, digest and apply the book this weekend.

This is the same brand and level as my new bike so I have to wonder if its wheels came out of the same machine with the same disregard. Perhaps my plus tires and boost spacing will save me!

I was having similar problems with broken spokes this year on my rear wheel (over 5 snapped in a couple months after a few years of riding this cycle/wheelset). I ended up boning up on wheelbuilding technique on the BF Mechanics forum and hand rebuild the wheel with triple-butted spokes, true as an arrow and spokes intact after 5 months of running over potholes. Hand-building is really superior to the OEM machine-building.
