First step DONE!
so today was my first serious commute to work. I commute to the closest mall, grocery store, church, etc. but work was a step for me. its only about 10k distance. the thing that worried me was car traffic, on my route the challenge is school busses.
overall it wasn't so bad. i carry a 30lb backpack with laptop/files/papers/lunch/change of cloths to work. i did 10k in 40 mins. last 10 mins was climbing a terrible hill just to get to the school i work at. but after that it felt pretty good!!! way to celebrate car-free day to boot!!
only unpleasant parts was almost getting buzzed by a tow truck while he warned me "you going to get killed doing this!!", and and old couple who were impatiently honking at me from behind while i approached a 4 way stop. (i always signal a stop with fist facing down at stop signs so i simply pointed at the stop sign and made an emphatic "STOP" signal once again). they glared at me and i just waved
now that i know its not so bad i hope i can do it more often! aiming for 2x a week for starters...3 if i feel extra peppy!

Excellent!! Stick with it for a few weeks and you should treat yourself to some panniers to get that 30lbs off your back. Also, I presume the same laws of physics apply in Toronto, so you get to come down that hill on the way home.
