hi guys, I just wanted to add my first month's commute experince (not that anyone cares).
soo.. this past month, i have been riding to and from work along with my g/f. I currently have an old huffy (dont laugh... i know.. i will get a new one soon) but i got a huffy to "test" the water, and so far, I love the biking. We ended up biking to the beach, going from one beach to the next, and exploring LA more.
She has an new iron horse mountain bike that I want to put slicks on. I am also looking for a "new" used bike to make as my commuter and possibly upgrading hers too.. but that wont be in the near future ... so far we have gotten lights for night rides, and a basket for her. It is every enjoyable to just ride until we reach a location where we wanted to seat down, talk or rest up, see the sun set or what not. The ride back is not that difficult since there isnt much hills in LA. It is great to be able to beat traffic. normally i would either drive or take the bus. my morning commute time on bike is a little longer than my commute time by car and about the same as my commute time by bus. however, after work, my bike commute is faster than both of the other form.
at first, biking was tiring. my knees feels a little sore, and my legs is sore for sure. but now its getting better.
i have been reading a lot of posting in the commuting section. you guys doing 20+ miles one way is something i must admire. i hope i will continue to commute even if i end up moving a little farther away from my destination. (i am planning to apply to dental school sometimes next year, wish me luck on that)...
anyways, let me give a shout out to all ur bikers out there. I wish you guys a safe trip home.

One full month of commuting isn't something to take lightly. I'd be willing to guestimate that a good portion of the commuters here don't do a full month at a time, then again some of us have given up our cars for full time commuting...anyhow. Good going! and don't worry about the Huffy, some will tell you that you are going to hell for not dumping a minimum of $600.00 on a bike at a bike shop, but I used a scrapped out huffy as my winter bike last year and it worked out just fine.
