A good beam from a small light.

This is from ebay, the light and the bike bracket were bought and shipped from different places, but they are made for each other.

It's 52 LED's with 6 aaa batteries. It weighs about the same as my Cateye 2.4 watt micro halogen. It is a little brighter, and the beam is much better. It is even everywhere and the illumination goes right out to 90 degrees on each side. Look at how much the ground is lit up right under the light! There is no other light there. Unusual. Total was about $60. The bracket is poor, I added a piece of rubber so it could compress something and stay closed. A piece of Velcro around the whole thing will be added. It needs it. They say it will go 20 hours. Dunno yet I'll find out. The Cateye is a little less than three hours run time.
It seems to have the best beam of any small self contained light for under $60.oo

What do you think **********? Have you seen a light this small with a beam this good?

Yes! But the bike bracket is. The light itself looks very rugged.

Mag-Lite 3-watt LED Mini-Mag using 2 AA batteries. Adjustable beam pattern, small, doesn't weight very much, very rugged, exceptionally bright, and runs 3.5 hours on alkaline batteries. Estimated run time on lithium AA camera batteries is estimated to be 24 hours but I have not confirmed this yet. I have 12 hours run time so far on lithium 1.5 AA batteries and they still check well into the green on the battery tester. I used 2 cheap EMT conduit hangers bolted back to back as the mount. Flashlight cost $23.73 at Wal-mart and two 1/2" EMT conduit hangers cost .96 cents each.

I'm glad you brought that up. That is my light. The shipping is $5.35 I believe, on that auction. So that's around $18.oo
That includes no bracket. I think my bracket came from singapore. If I guess and say $2 plus 5$ conservativly for the bracket..That brings up to about $25. I paid more for my light. I had to pay some customs I think ?? If you can get the rubber twofish light bracket get that instead. I think it's $6.00 plus shipping.

When I bought my light the same seller was offereing the 52 LED light and the 118 LED light right next to each other. He said the 52 was brighter than the 118 light. The batteries were different, less voltage I think in the 118, I can't remember the details. But I bought the 52 because he was selling both and said the 52 was brighter.

Is there any advantage/disadvantage of using many small LEDs over one big one? I got my girlfriend a Planet Bike Super Spot 1W LED, which is bright, white, and produces a reasonably wide beam. Costs about $30. I've been thinking about building a DIY 3W LED light, but maybe there's some reason to use lots of small LEDs instead?

Of the ones that I have tried in the dark, the lights with a lot of leds have a wider more even beam shape. Better for riding a bike. You could probably do the same thing with the right lens, but I have not seen one. I have owned a couple of one big led lights that were too narrow, like many of the current small bike lights on the market. That's why I posted this light, the beam is unusually wide and even. And still bright. And it does not take up much handlebar space.

2manybikes, do you have any of the higher power LED lights at your disposal? I'd like to see a comparison shot.

Thanks

Where could we find the bracket?

I was looking around for the bracket and couldn't find such a bracket anywhere. Anyone has found it yet?

Well, if you get a brand new bike, and attach the light improperly, and then go over a bumpy bridge, and the light jiggles until it falls off ... maybe only a few LEDs will break, instead of the whole thing. Dagnabbit.

Sorry, those are gone.

I do have a popular smaller one, the Cateye HL-E 4oo. A very small light.
I have the 28 LED version of my 52 led light.
I also have a 4aa 2.4 watt Cateye micro halogen light.
Also a Halogen Nightrider that will run at 15,10, or 6 watts.

does that help?

Did you already look at the twofish bracket that is linked to in this thread ? I'l look for my bracket, and be back.

edit: Found it. Must be the same place I got mine, shiped from hong kong. No problems with them at all.

I'm using two cat eyes one is and EL510 at 800 candlepower and the other is an EL520 at 1200 candlepower I point mount one slightly higher and I get pretty good illumination right in front of the tire and then about 15 feet ahead. My commute takes through and industrial park area with a lot of street lights and then onto a road thats not lit at all and I'm doing good. Your results may not be different. The cateyes are the cats meow, OOOO thats bad

Can you take a picture with a known cateye LED, lock the camera, then take the pic with the 52-led light again, so we can get a good idea of how bright it is?

I've actually looked at this 28 LED light but I've been reluctant to purchase it! Could you possibly get a picture of the difference between the 28 and the 52? If there is a large one (I could just take your word for it if there is) I'll go ahead and purchase the 52LED light with a bracket.

Thanks for posting a thread on these cluster LED lights - I've yet to see one so helpful

I tried that last year and I think the camera would not do that. All It has for exposure is just a slider bar on the screen that goes side to side. It does not actually have a shutter speed or apeture control that will lock if I remember right. I'll read the manual again today and see if I missed something. I can try and have two lights or more on at the same time side by side. That might do the trick. One of the other beam comparison shots is done that way. I could use the Cateye micro halogen and the other Cateye LED.

For Anyone considering buying one of these !

It is a great light for the size and weight and price, but the side of the garage is white, and it was very dark in the yard. This light will not seem as powerfull when pointed at the grey pavement or with streetlights around. I wanted to show the wide even beam pattern clearly on the side of the garage, because I was so impressed. If you are looking in this price range it's still a good deal. I should take some photos in the street with more ambient lighting. It will look a lot different. If you can wait another day or two I can get that done.

No problem I can do that. Even if the photo looks close I would get the 52 anyway. More light is always better given a choice.

I have one, it's too weak to see the ground unless it is pitch black. That's one reason I tried the 52 LED light.

That's two Cateye lights maybe that helps.

Can the top part of the bracket slide off? It is plastic so I worry about breaking it quickly if every time I have to unbuckle the flashlight.

The top pops open easily, too easily. You probably have to put something around it if you go over many bumps.
