Dateline: Manhattan Bridge (NYC)

ITEM 1: North-Side Bike Lane Closed. I haven't found an easy answer to the question When does it reopen? But another commuter said he heard "Next October."

ITEM 2: Why does the south-side of the bridge seem so much easier to get across than the north? The north had a serious hill that you were grateful to crest. Why should the south side be flatter? Or is it just the magnificent view of the Brooklyn Bridge?

ITEM 3: Why were there 10 cops on the bridge this morning? And why do the pricks in the little NYPD golf carts (two of them!) insist on riding in the exact middle of the path?

ITEM 4: Who were those two people f•cking on the observation platform of the bridge last night at 8 pm?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Not sure, but are our wonderful nyc bridges plowed in the winter on the bike paths?

Eventually. But last year we had only one snow. (25 inches of snow, but still only one storm.)

Item 1: Here's a link to the NYC DOT page w/ bridge info: https://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/mot...triverbgs.html
There's a link there to a pdf of the official notice regarding the North pathway.
It pretty much just says what you already know; closed through Oct. 2007.

Item 2: I think the gravitational pull of the sun (being more in the southern sky as we move into winter) helps you go up the hill.

Item 3: How many cops does it take to screw in a lightbulb? 10. One to screw it in and 9 to beat up the protesters.

Item 4: Sadly, it wasn't me.

the stairs on the south make it seem flatter, north side also leaves you in a slightly lower part on both boroughs

overall, I feel inconvenienced not being able to take the north though, I don't like getting off my bike and carrying it... also I much prefer where it come out at in manhattan.

what times do you cross it each day? I'm on it at 8:00 AM and around 4:40 PM.

Crap! I gotta walk up stairs to use the bridge? Either that or dodge peds on the BB or take the W'burg bridge which usually leaves me far north of where I'm going. Sigh. Wish I could take the Bklyn Battery tunnel.

I was just thinking of what a nightmare it would be to commute home on Halloween. Obviously, I'm not cutting through the West Village....

Meanwhile, anybody doing the Tour de Bronx?

Does anyone know when they are going to open the Gothals bridge from Staten Island to Elizabeth? I am really waiting for that day as you can imagine, there's a huge mall in Elizabeth that's better than anything within 25 miles!

Bklyn, you can take any bike you like. It's only 25-40 miles. And I'm planning on doing it on a fixie.

Out of curiosity, how often are the paths on the East River bridges patrolled by the police?

I see them on the 59th Street Bridge fairly often... this year. I don't remember seeing them as much last year. I commute in before 9AM when I don't often see a cop on the MUP itself, and on the way home 6ish in the evening I see them more often. I'm not too fond of any motorized vehicles on the path, construction vehicles aside, they're just doing their job. I don't see why the cops can't get out of their tuk-tuks and walk across, or leave it to the bike patrol.

Neezy, Yosarrian:
I'll be at the tour also. My friend bailed at the last minute, so I'll be solo. I'm riding a black Lotus (steel frame touring bike from the 70's; flashy silver fenders).

My only question is, Why does the longer route start later than the short route? If you're doing 40 miles, and you want to keep the faster pace, you're at the Bronx County Bldg. at 10 am. Is that correct?

Yeah, on the Queensborough the cops are always there in the afternoon (4:20'ish) and I guess till Sukram gets there. Usually one out of the meter-maid mobile and one in it. I've seen a couple on bikes. In the morning, there's only the construction crew, and that's around 7:45 or so.

Bklyn, good meeting you today. Thanks for slowing down on those big hills around Manhattan college. Those were killers.
