night visions while riding night time?
 

say, if you're gonna ride night trails, why not just wear a night vision goggles instead? it's less heavier than HID lights

Because

1. I wear glasses. Kinda tough to fit them over those.

2. I'd rather not have something driven into my face if I do a face plant. The Borg look just isn't for me.

3. If someone is shooting at you, not being seen at night is a good thing. If people are going to be driving cars into you, it probably isn't:rolleyes: Personally, I kinda like my third dimension and would rather not have it invalidated.

4. If you come sneaking up on someone in the dark, you might just need those googles to hide you from them taking a pot shot at you.

What does this have to do with commuting?

NVG's don't have the same field of vision that HID lights offer. Plus, all the headmount NVG's that I've seen would make fitting a helmet (other than a military lid) pretty difficult.

This reminds me of an old SNL skit with Christopher Walken...

Field of view reduced to around 40 degrees, not optimal for riding a bicycle. No color perception the world would be all green and black. Oh, and NVG's of the quality necessary to ride a bicycle would cost over $5000 maybe as much as $10000 if you really wanted to be able to see and you wanted a good enough mount to keep them in place (GEN III preferably IV). And even at that cost they are very fragile devices that require regular inspections and upkeep to perform properly, not something that a civilian would want to have to maintain on their own.

It's a really bad idea.

If you have ever used them you know they would NOT be ideal.

Some of you guys have no imagination... I don't think the OP was being 100% serious on this one, just a 'what if?' kind of deal. But then again, it's the Internet so I shouldn't assume the OP's intent...

However - I think the obvious problem would be what if you encountered a source of light - such as another rider with a huge HID system, or a good rear blinky? Wouldn't that blind the heck out of you, or at least render the vision system useless?
