One loses a bike, one finds a bike..

Sorry to hear about jyossarian losing a bike. I just got me a new bike tonight off EBay. Trek 520. Very, very happy that I will be able to put the Schwinn MTB back as a MTB instead of my commuter. Picked this thing up for $290.

Anyone know what that thing is on the down tube behind the front wheel?

I lost a bike?!? I didn't know that! Lemme go count 'em. Looks like I have 'em all. Maybe it was Nam you were thinking about that had his bike swiped?

Maybe that lever thing is a downtube shifter? Looks kinda far down though.

I don't recall the name of it, but it flips down to keep the front wheel from turning, so that when you lean your bike against something it doesn't roll and fall. If you send it to me I'll be glad to use it and demonstrate....Oh, and nice bike.

No need. I think everyone gets the picture on their own. On the other hand, I've got just the pedals that bike needs. Ship that bike my way and I'll install/try them out for you.

I think that thing is a wheel lock. It flips down and hugs the front wheel keeping it straight allowing you to lean it against a wall or something without it falling over. Without that thing, the wheel can turn and the bike will crash. Just remember to flip it back up before you ride.

I was gonna say those look like my brifters (brake lever/shifters where you knock them to the side instead of pulling them in to shift gears), but then I looked back and saw no little black "paddle" to shift back up, so... where ARE the shifters?

Yep STI brifters. Guess someone updated it. They are old though. It says triple on it instead of 105 or ultegra.

I've read someone talking about that thing on the touring board. Guess if you're loaded up, this would be a good thing to have.

Maybe I should collect some addresses and have the place I got it ship it around...

It's called a "Flick Stand" and as others have posted, is used to hold the bike in place while leaned against something.

I use a worn-out and overtightened headset for the same purpose

Of course, my bike is nearly impossible to ride no-hands.

That's the one. Specializes in used bikes. Website sucks. They shoot all their bikes on that same wall....
