what can my wheels take?

My jamis nova has mavic ma3 rims and I have serfas 700x38 tires on them. I got an alcatraz chain lock which weights a ton, I weigh 150ish. I was going to go to the store after work but it involved getting some heavy items like milk and odules and I was concerned about overwhelming the wt capacity of my wheels.

I want to use my bike for more errands so I'm wondering what the limits are. The heavy chain kinda sucks but sometimes there is no bike rack so a U-lock wouldn't work. I have a cable lock, a really thick master one but I think I would rather carry the wt of the limp chain than wrestle with the cable coils, my bike gets more banged up from that than anything else!

How many spokes do the wheels have? I'm going to assume 32h.

32h MA3's and 28mm tires have held held me and a usual commuting load (230lbs?) just fine. I don't think you should be concerned until you and your loaded weight are well over 200lbs.

Check the wheels to make sure they're straight and true, once they start to get uneven then the extra weight will kill them quicker. Likewise be extra careful and don't jump curbs or potholes when you've got a bunch of weight.

You should be able to carry about 10 gallons (US) of milk. I save a bit of weight on my bike by locking the U lock to the rack at work, and only carrying a real flimsy cable lock on the bike. A quality luggage rack on the back of the bike eases the handling when carrying extra weight
