Additional theft resistance idea.

Notice I said theft resistance, not theft proof.

Some friends leave two $300-$400 mtb's locked up all during the week on a nearby island that is loaded with tourists in the summer. There are tons of bikes there and it's crowded. They do this so they can skip bringing two bikes in their boat when they go over for a weekend. They bring them home in the winter.

They use a cable lock.

They lock them in different places week to week.

They take the seats off and let the air out of the tires.

I think letting the air out of the tires is a good idea to discourage theft. Anyone just wanting a joy ride will skip your bike. Anyone wanting to steal your bike and ride off on it will skip your bike. It makes your bike look worse.

Buy a huge chain and lock? The Kryptonite New York chain comes in a 5 foot length for motorcycles for example. I assume none of the wheels are quick release..

Because a U-lock can't fit around many solid objects where you could use a chain (or cable)?

I wouldn't want to have a dedicated island-riding bike, especially a $400 one. I doubt I'd go to an island every week.

I'd imagine they use a 12V compressor stowed on the boat to pump the low psi tires. Or at least a good floor pump.

They just leave a good floor pump on the boat all the time. Nice and simple.

If you do steal a bike, there's a limited number of ways you can get it off the island. Most people would have to use the public ferry, in plain view of all the passengers. Even with a private boat you need to go down a public dock in full view with the bike.
If you can afford your own ocean going boat, you don't need to steal an old bike anyway.

Maybe it is the island!!

Not far from Long Island. Possibly visible on a clear day.

Quick release pedals are a bit of a deterent as the thief can't ride the bike away. They come in clipless and platform.

I've never heard of these. Great idea though.
