Cross Check tire question

Hello all. I just got my Cross Check the other day, and I had a question for you guys. When talking to my local shop, I asked them to replace the original tires with a smoother version, since I would be doing on road commuting. So they gave me some nimbus tires. The size is 700 x 38. The cross check manual says my original tires were 700 x 32. I am not sure what size tires fit on any given rim, but wouldn't the shop have had to give me a new rim as well?

This is a huge NOOB question, but I would appreciate some input. When these tires wear out, I will probably want to get some thinner ones to give me more speed on my commute. (so will i need new wheels....?)

thanks again!

Depends on the rim. Can't find a spec for the Alex DV15 at the moment, but a jump from 32 to 38 is not that significant, more so as I be inclined to believe the original rims were spec'd for bigger tires.

I'm currently running a set of 42mm tires on rims "designated" for a max of 28mm.

They most likely didn't switch rims. You can measure the rim width, and find out what range of tire size is optimal for the rim.
You might be able to find the rim manufacturer's web site and find their specs for tire size and pressure compatibility.

Heck, I run 3" mountain bike tires on rims that are narrower than my touring bike rims. But, yes, jumping from 32 to 38 isn't that big of a deal. Use the same wheels. You might want to run a little lower pressure in them, however. I tend to blow 38mm off my rims at around 100. But the ride from a 38mm is much better than a 32mm tire, so it's worth it.

Couldn't agree more. I was running 32's and went to a 42 on a lark. Absolutely love the ride, it's such a blast.

You'll be fine running wide tires on skinny rims.

I did the same on my Cross Check - running 700 x 38 Conti's on the original rims with no problems whatsoever. Enjoy the silky-smooth ride!
