I'm in the planning stages of building up a new commuter using a cross frame.

I've searched the forum for addtional information on moustache bar setup. There is a lot of excellent information posted, but I can't seem to find where anyone has tried mounting ergo shifters in the horizontal plane with success? Maybe I'm heading in the wrong direction and I'm stuck w/ bar end shifters?

Also, if I decide to go with road bike disc brakes (like Avid), is there a combination shifter well suited for this application?

ummm.. I don't really see how that'd work too well. You'd have to get pretty far under the hood to shift the "loosen" direction. Maybe if you used Campagnolo it'd be OK - the release on Campy ERGO is a separate thumb-lever rather than the lever tucked inside the brake handle a'la STI.

Any possibility of using either moutain style under the bar shifters or Sram twist? Not sure how they would look or fit with the mustache.....but it's a thought

Sure they work. Your thumbs under the bar will easily reach the thumb levers. The most comfortable position as far as shifting is concerend will be acheived if the bars are mounted as high as possible.....you will not have to cock your wrists as much to reach the thumb levers.

That's the setup I was hoping for. Nice looking ride! I have some older campy ergo's I'm thinking of using along with the rest of the groupo. I'll have to mix and match, but like your arrangement. Still considering a way to use Avid's though.

p.s. I have 3 litespeeds: Basso (made by them), Ghisala, and a full suspension MTB I'm using for a winter commuter. All great rides (w/ speedplay on the RBs!) Now I need a summer commuter that can handle some trail riding.

That's an old Litespeed Classic frame I bought new back in 1993. The components are old but solid performing Record 8-speed groupo.

Wow! Another gorgeous example of what I'm thinking of. Thanks Keep the pics coming! I can't wait to get started. The frame won't be available until next spring, but I'm trying to select components now.

It might depend on exactly where you have the levers placed, but i had no problems hitting the inside lever on shimano shifter with my finger. I think it would actually be easier than the campy shifters, as i could shift from anywhere i could reach the brake, rather than just right on top of the lever.

Avid road disc brakes should work well with any road lever.

Just a quick bit of advice. You might consider waiting and purchasing Shimano's road disc brake -- the unreleased BR-505. I've heard they'll be a little nicer than the Avids.

I run STI shifters on my Moustache bars, and LOVE them.

Where have you read/heard this? From my own experience, I have found Avid's mountain disc brakes (mechanical) to be better than Shimano's (mechanical). I'll withhold judgment until they are released, but I'd be surprised if they were better than Avid's road disc brake.
