Not your typical SUV encounter

During my Friday night commute home, I had this sense that a Montero had been following me for a half mile. In town, I usually move right along, but traffic was light and it seemed like this thing should overtake me. However, cars should only be going 25 where I was, so it was very possible that the driver simply wasn't in a hurry.

As I was left town, the Montero pulled up alongside. I kicked up my pace near my maximum but it stayed with me. I slowed down to around 20. It also slowed down. I'm starting to get a little creeped out. On rare occasion, bored young men mess with me, and more people seem to be drunk/high on Fridays than other days. While my attention is focused on the SUV, I manage to hit a rock that was bigger than your normal gravel chunk. It flies into the side of the vehicle with a resounding whap. The window rolls down.

Because normal people don't shadow bicycles, I'm wondering what lunatic's vehicle I just dinged, how many people are in it, what they're high on, and what's about to happen to me. I try to see inside the SUV without making hostile eye contact that could get me hit, shot, etc.

"Hey -- where'd you get those super bright lights?" It was just some lady who wanted to get her cyclist hubby something nice for Xmas...........

I had a guy do that to me when I was at a stop light, but he wanted to get himself something nice.

385 watts?
Everyone knows, if you can't do 440 watts you are going to get dropped! Prepare to get dropped!

In this case, I only added a few mph. Although I ride my bad weather bike (shown below) for errands on the weekend, I usually like to burn my legs up on the Friday night ride home. And no, that's not my commuter. I only ride the thing below at night in town.

We Montero owners are a good bunch

Best vehicle I've owned to date. I was heartbroken when the crank pulley spun off at 232k mi... otherwise I'd still have that thing.

How the heck did that happen? Those things are really torqued. Removing a crank pulley looks simple but it's actually a PITA.

It was a known flaw with the crank pulley bolts that I basically ignored. It was a $4 part that I should have replaced preventitively that wound up costing me $7000 (for a Subaru).
