Merry f'ing Christmas! I'm not out of a job yet, but the 29th will be my last day here.
The way budget worked out, the VP pulled all contractor funding for '07. This really sucks, because they really like me here and were looking to get me on full time as an employee instead of contractor. Unfortunately, there hasn't been any budget approval for new hire positions either.
Anyhow, a bit of a Christmas bummer. I got ahold of my headhunters and they are actively looking. I got ahold the local college (where I worked for almost 9 years up until early 2006) about a Network Admin position they have open, and it doesn't look like it'll be *THAT* bad.
It still sucks tho.
Anyone need a BSD/Linux/Solaris/Windows/MacOS/AIX/BeOS/Plan9/DOS ninja guru wizard near Kansas City?

You sound like my friend Joe who moved to Kansas. I think he was working on servers at a hospital up there.

Hmm, I think Falkon might be onto something. Check out the hospitals, nursing homes, etc. You might be able to do a freelance kind of thing.
Of course, I have no idea what it is you exactly do, but with how resourceful your posts are, I think you can pull something together.

Bummer about the job. I've been there many times so know what you're going through.
+1
All of my REALLY GOOD jobs were with large hospitals (here in Atlanta and elsewhere). Most hospitals need good IT people.

Yah, I'll look around. I'd really like to get on at Garmin (I'm a quick 12 mile round trip bike commute from their World HQ!!!) but they are sticklers for education, of which I have very little. I applied at Lawrence Memorial Hospital (in Lawrence, KS, home of KU for you college sports fans) a while ago and got rejected. 90 kilobucks per year would have been nice, but they wanted some insane background and education for it.
I can do damn near anything I put my mind to, but I'm best suited for UNIX Performance tuning and administration, database work, and network security stuff.
My resume (which is, until tonight, missing my current job)

I'm not worried about finding a job. I'm worried about finding a job that I can bike to.

Monster is great. Not to be a downer, but don't put on there that you want to bike to work

Well, Duh. I don't know why, but people don't think a bike is reliable transportation. All-weather, all terrain, and no waiting for the windsheild to thaw. Honestly when it was snow and ice a few weeks ago, I was much happier to be on a bike than in a cage, but that's just me.
By the way, the new hot rez FTW:

That way, they weren't quite as surprised when they discovered that I planned to commute by bike. I had it shipped out ahead of me and actually reassembled the bike right here at work and rode it home.
Good luck on your search.

Thanks. I've done all sorts of cool stuff, and I'm very good at what I do (and pick up on new stuff quickly).
I just wish I would have gone ahead and gotten *some* kind of degree.

Get started on an online degree while you're finding a new job for the next time this happens?

Well maybe just a week-long pause:
The managers around here have been scrambling the past couple of days. I was told by my Boss^2 (Boss's boss) that they were going to submit me to HR for hire when a position opened up, but was told it was up to HR to open a position for the new year. No clue how long it would be.
I guess behind the scenes, they were getting sign-offs from VP's, HR gurus, directors, etc to get a position opened up ASAP.
I got a call from HR today, they told me to submit my resume and whatnot, to get the ball rolling on "officially" getting me applied for a position. I'll be the only applicant, and as far as I know, I will have a week-long vacation and start back up on the 8th (where I'll spend a day and a half in Associate orientation, which is significantly more involved than my contractor orientation)
So, a slight sigh of relief. I still don't know how much it'll pay, but something is better than nothing.

pssst...you have an error in your resume. I don't know why but when I review resumes these kinds of things immediately give you a negative checkmark. I didn't look any further.

Yah, I saw it and fixed it. I just haven't gotten to upload it to my website yet (work doesn't allow SSH, or SFTP access). I slapped self on forehead.
