Yo! Mr. Viper ....................

It turns out I'm going to be, not only in your town, but in your neighbourhood for a weekend at Spring Break.

I'm going to fly in and my wife and kids are driving over, they are going to carry a bike for me.

You want to get together for a ride for a couple of hours one day and spin some pedals??

Hey for sure! When is spring break for you? We have one here in April I think, is that the same time?

Are you looking to go for a road ride or a MTB ride? Either or, just let me know.

OK, this is pathetic, and I admit it.

I booked my flight yesterday and am not not home right now, but for us it is in March and I am booked into town MArch 16 to MArch 19.

I'm thinking if we can get out for a couple of hours a day Saturday and Sunday, we're both Golden.

My wife is driving out so I am going to send a bike with her ( this tells you the state of my bicycle inventory) then all I have to do is fly in and ride.

Grampa is in Avalon not far from Avalon Shopping Centre and John Lake.

That's excellent, You will be just around the corner from me. Last March we still had a lot of snow around here, it wasn't until mid April that it was clear enough to ride road bikes.

I'll keep you posted to the weather so you'll know what to pack for bikes If it's mild enough we could lose most of the snow, however we did get a lot of snow this year. The MTB trails would probably be the last to be clear enough to ride.

So, my wife phoned me today from Doug's Spoke and Sport. Tells me it's a GOOD store.

Looking forward to getting in there next month.

Here are 2 pictures I took the other day during my commute to work.

8:00 am on the way to work with the moon

5:10 pm on the way home with the Sun

Temperature was -22C both ways. It should be warmer come March, however hopefully most of the snow is gone... We've had a lot of snow this year!

They don't have snow plows in canada? I see road riders out just about any time of year. Usually a couple days after a storm so that the salt has melted all the ice etc. Maybe it never stops storming?

Hehe - salt is not often used on the prairie. It's often too cold for the salt to have an ice melting effect. In Calgary they salt in a few specific locations, but CGY is prone to extreme temperature fluctuations (+10C today, -15C tomorrow kind of thing).

Salt is also a time honoured way of destroying your enemies ability to feed themselves by poisoning their land's ability to support crops - bad idea in a region that generates massive amounts of food for export.

We do have snow plows in Canada ( ), however generally our roads are not clear enough to be riding a road bike or a bike with out studs. Even though the streets are plowed, enough snow and ice remains that even on our main thoroughfares, the only real cleared sections are the paths where the car tires run down. You generally will not see a road bike until the snow is all melted from the streets. Even then the sides of the roads are littered with lots of gravel, glass & debris, such that real road riding only begins in mid April. Such is life in Saskatchewan.

Here are some pictures I took of a main street just now. It's snowing very strong, however it gives you and idea of the street conditions.

Imagine most roads like this with out the fresh snow, comprised mainly of packed ice, and that's 90% of our streets.

Very good points rajman. I think they do mix in a little salt, but it's primarily gravel that is thrown down.

Well,

My wife is back in Saskatoon this weekend, actually spending most of her time up in Humboldt.

Take a look in the Star-Phoenix and see what the men's team from Saskatoon-Nutana are doing up there and you'll understand why my wife is in town cheering for her brother.

This explains many things about my property tax dollars at work and the state of my front lawn.

That road is Preston Ave heading North. On the left is the U of S campus, on the right is the U of S Agricultual feilds. We would have just crossed College drive.
